Clackmannan, a town in the above parish, formerly the County town. but the County business is now all done at Alloa as seen hereafter. On each side of the town of Clackmannan the ground has a gradual descent, but towards the West where the old Tower of Clackmannan is placed, it is bold and rocky. The surrounding scenery, as beheld from this tower is exceedingly picturesque and beautiful. The foreground is filled by the Forth, here a mile in breadth, and 3 miles farther down expanding into a wide sheet of water resembling a large inland lake, which is called the Firth of Forth from the junction of the boundary (on the river Forth) between the parishes of Tulliallan and Clackmannan. The tower or Keep - now the property of the Earl of Zetland - is all that now remains of the castle or palace of Robert Bruce, in which that monarch is said to have resided sometime previous to the battle of Bannockburn. Till very lately the sword and helmet of the illustrious Bruce were kept here; they are now in the possession of the Earl of Elgin, at Broomhall, in Fifeshire, to whom the widow of Robert Bruce, Esq bequeathed them. In the middle of the principal street stands a ruin which was once the prison and town house.
The County of Clackmannan consists of the parishes of Clackmannan, Dollar, Tillioultry, Alloa and three separate parts of the parish of L[ogie] one of these parts, together with a portion of Stirling parish, form a detached part of the County of Clackmannan. The County is conjoined [continued over on page2] |

Shire of Kinross, and the two parishes of Tulliallan and Culross, in returning a member to parliament. The Sheriff and Small debt courts are held at Alloa. Stirling is the common gaol of the County of Clackmannan; but there is a lock-up house at Alloa. There is only one sheriff-depute for this and the neighbouring county of Stirling. He appoints substitutes; one of whom constantly resides at Alloa, and holds the Sheriff court for Clackmannan there.
The parish of Clackmannan being in two parts the greater portion contains 8840 Statute Acres by computation from the Ordnance Plans; the detached portion will be noticed in a separate name book. There are no detached portions of any other parish locally situated within this parish

A river of considerable importance which takes its rise near the east base of Ben Lomond, and after a very tortuous course of 60 or 80 miles becomes the Frith of Forth, the scenery along its banks is varied, but for fully half its course it glides silently on through a very fertile plain dividing the county of Stirling from those of Perth and Clackmannan, it is navigable as far as the town of Stirling, up to which point Steamers, and vessels of small tonnange proceed, its principal tributaries are the Teith, Allan, Bannock and Devon, together with a host of other rivulets of less importance. A very small portion of this river occurs in the parish of Clackmannan. From the boundary of Clackmannan and Tulliallan Parishes it is considered, on the Ordnance Plan, as the Firth of Forth |

A stream of considerable extent which rises in the hilly district of the western part of the parish of Saline, Co. [County] of Fife, and after a rather tortuous course of some miles falls into the River Forth about 2 miles south of the village of Clackmannan. during the early part of its course it forms part of the boundary between the Cos. [Counties] of Clackmannan and Fife, and for a short distance prior to its confluence with the Forth it divides the parish of Clackmannan from Alloa. The banks of this stream are in many places high and precipitous, and for the most part, thickly wooded, its course is moderate, with a stony bed. A large portion of its water is diverted into an artificial channel, thence to a large reservoir for supplying the town of Alloa with that needful element. |

The village of Clackmannan is built on rising ground, which slopes gently towards the east from King's Seat Hill, on which stands the old tower. There are a good many two storey houses, but the greater number are only one storey, and, with the exception of a few modern, slated buildings, all tiled, and, in general, good repair. The only street of any importance is one which extends in an easterly direction through the village; the western half of this street is called High Street, and the eastern half is known as Main Street.
It has three churches, namely, the parish church, U.P. [United Presbyterian], and Free Church, and three schools. It is nominally the capital of the county, although Alloa is so virtually, and will have to be treated as such on the Ordnance Survey plans, all county business being transacted in the latter place. |

It was surrounded by a moat, no part of which is at present traceable, but a small portion a short distance to the east of the Tower, where the drawbridge was placed. It has a stone spiral staircase which gives access to two stone floors supported by arches. The walls are of great thickness, ad [and] are in a good state of preservation. "The old tower, which still remains, is said to have been built
by King Robert Bruce. From the style of the building indeed (for
there is no date upon it,) it appears to have been erected about
this time; and from several names of places, we may conclude
that it actually was the residence of some of the Kings, as the fol-
lowing names seem to indicate 'King's Seat Hill', 'King's Meadow
Park' and others of a similar nature, in the vicinity of the tower.
The greatest height of the tower is 79 feet. It contains a variety of
apartments, and has been surrounded by a moat, with a drawbridge.
Adjoining the tower stood the old mansion, the residence of the
family, till the direct line became extinct." Statistical Account. |
