140.03 A small village or hamlet, the houses of which, with the exception of one two storey slated building, are all one storey, tiled, and in good repair. There are in it a School, one publichouse, one small grocer shop, a smithy, two saw mills and a corn mill. To the latter is attached one of the sawmills , both worked by water. The sawmill on the south side of the Black Devon is worked by steam of ten horse power. The name is derived from the circumstance of a corn mill having been here long before any of the other houses.

140.03 A school in the village of Forest Mill, the house, which was formerly a dwelling house), is given rent free by the Earl of Mar, together with £10 a year towards the support of the school. It is under Government inspection, and has a grant of £18 a year. These sums together with the school fees give the teacher a salary of about £40. Education afforded: English reading, writing, arithmetic, geometry, and Latin. Average attendance 30 - Unendowed.
