014 A substantially built harbour, Constructed by two Piers of masonry in the form of a quadrilateral, having high parapet walls on the outer margin bending inwards at the entrance, also a small jetty from the land side forming an inner and outer basin. It accomodates a number of fishing boats there being about 16 large and nearly the same amount of small ones, belonging to fish curers & fishermen of the district, the former paying an annual rent of nearly £100. It is visited occasionally by Coasting vessels for farm produce, potatoes chiefly, Is also one of the Harbours of refuge for the N. [North] East coast. Was erected about 60 years ago at Government expense. Now the Propy [Property] of His Grace the DuKe of Portland. of Langwell Berriedale &c.
