CAIRNS OF YAREHOUSE Cairns of Yarehouse (Continued) [from Page 241]
The highest part is 18 feet above the floor. The main Entrance is to S [South] by E [East] & a second one, (perhaps later) East. Midway in the passage forming the Main Entrance is, on the East side the [cast] of a long chamber & on the W, [West] the stair ascending W, [West], to upper Chambers or Galleries now removed. There is an opening from a landing into the court 7 feet 3 inches above the floor. On the N W, [North West] is a long chamber the entrance to which was latterly, if not originally, at 3 feet above the floor of the Tower & the same above the Chamber. Probably a part of the wall has been rebuilt & the entrance changed in level. Internal fittings testify a second occupation. In the Centre of the Court is a fire-place. Outside the Tower are extensive out-works of the usual irregular chambers, so that the whole collection of buildings is 110 feet Diameter. Beyond the builds was a ditch with bank on the outside of it, but the bank has been destroyed by Cultivation. In this Brough were found various remains which are now in the Museum in Edinburgh." John O'Groat Journal, October 19th 1871
