There is in the parish of Watten, in Caithness, and near the kirK, a small town called Stenhouse. Very near the farm house of Stenhouse, there is a large rocK lying in the middle of a green spot of ground, which, at first sight, appears to have been brought to that spot for some purpose. The old tradition concerning it is that it was a monstrous serpent turned into that stone, by St Magnus, the tutelar saint of OrKney. This was monKish legend, for the MonKs invariably dealt in the marvellous. Liotus was buried there, and that stone is the sepulchral monument of that great man. We add to this legend and say that this marvel happened also on the day that the battel of BannacKburn was fought, (OVER) [Continued on Page 22]

OS1/7/12/22 STONEHONE Stonehone 018 [Continued from Page 21] for saint Magnus wanted to give the news of this victory himself, and this way turned the serpent to a stone; and being in great haste, he crossed the Pentland Frith on a great stone, which is pointed out in the parish of BurricK, with the impression of the saint's foot upon it. The OrKneymen behaved gallantly in this battel, as will be told elsewhere. of Sculius, we have no tradition, nor any public monument. It is true, there is in the parish of Loth, in Sutherland, a vestige of a road that was cut of old, probably for the marching of an army, by which means they would be safe from any party that might attacK them from the top of the rocKs by which they must otherwise have marched. This pass or cut road is still called Ca Scuill, or the road of Sculius."

[Free Church] Manse, Watten Mr John Doull, Watten, Mr John Tait Watten 018 There is a tradition in this district affirming that a battle was fought here, and the tradition verified in the following extract from "Torfeus' History of Caithness". - About this time, Sculius the brother of Liotus, "sails for Scotland, and obtained a gift of the Earledom of OrKney from the "King of Scotland, who was easily persuaded to give away what belonged to another person. Sculius coming to Caithness, gathered a vast number of troops, and transporting his army to OrKney, engages in a war with Liotus, his brother. Liotus assembles a great number of men in OrKney; but after several conditions had been proposed, in order to bring about an accommodation, Sculius rejected them. A battel is fought, which was both obstinate and bloody; but Sculius is at last put to flight, and sailed for Caithness. Liotus pursued him, and continued in Caithness untill Sculius returned with another army, being assisted by the King of Scotland; and besides, he had a strong reinforcement from a Scots nobleman, called Comes Magbragdus, so that his army was superior to that of his brother Liotus. A battel was fought in the Dalls of Caithness, where the scots made a furious attack upon the enemy; but Liotus had ordered his men to Keep close together (OVER) [Continued on Page 52]

OS1/7/12/52 Supposed site of BATTLE [Continued from page 51] "close together untill the first onsett was over, and defend themselves from the blows aimed at them, which had a good effect; fo how soon the scots began to abate in their heat, Liotus charged them with great spirit, and acted the part of a brave General, for the Scots army began to retire, and run into disorder. After that a panic seized them, and they fled. Sculius, on the other hand, exerted himself to get his men to rally, which he in some measure effected, by encouraging some to act as brave men, threatening others, and showing them an example Thus the engagement turn'd [turned] hot again - at last Sculius was slain where the enemy stood thickest. Liotus seized Caithness as a conquest, and Kept possession of it by force of arms, which prov'd [proved] the the cause of long and bloody wars betwixt the Scots and Liotus; for the scots were deeply afflicted for the loss of their countrymen. - At length, Comes Magbragdus, the Scots nobleman formerly mentioned, marched to Caithnes with a great army, and attacked Liotus, in Paludibus Scidensibus, or the mossy plain ground near Spittal Hill Comes Magbragdus was far superior to Liotus as to numbers, but Liotus had such confidence in his own valour, and in the bravery of his troops, that he attack'd [attacked] with such ardour as put the scots to flight, slaying and wounding great numbers of them. Though he came off victorious, yet he was mortally wounded, and died a few days after the battel. - Liotus was burried in the town of Hofa, in Caithness". Pages 21, 22, 23, 24.

OS1/7/12/61 STANDING STONE [Greystones] Standing Stone Revd [Reverend] Mr Gunn, F.C. [Free Church] Manse Watten 018 This stone is a good specimen of the many standing stones which are to be met with in this County. It is situated near the Farm of Greystones and within fifty yeards of the Turnpike road leading to Thurso About half a centuary ago there were standing near the present one, other two, which were removed about that time for building purposes. Another is barely visible above the surface, And has no doubt fallen over and gradually been imbedded in the soil - The popular belief is, that, those standing stones are sepulchral monuments, either errected over the body of a Chief who had fallen in battle and had been interred there, or to mark the spot where he fell - But in this case there were at least four stones within a few feet of each other, so it is more probable that they were Druidical remains than covering the grave of a Danish chief as the people say -

Sutherland, Pennyland 018 Only a small portion of this Pictish house remains, the greater part of it having been removed some years ago. It was intended to have levelled it all to the ground, but the unearthing of a stone coffin or cist containing human remains deterred the farmer from wholly removing all traces of one of the finest Broughs in the district. The portion which is left standing contains more human remains which will no doubt remain there for some time to come - From descriptions received I may state that the skeleton and coffin or cist were of large dimensions, being upwards of 7 feet long - near the skull was found a small comb of deerhorn - which I have in my possession - A spring of fine water is in the side of this Picts house - which may have been used by its inhabitants - The structure of this dwelling was similar in every respect to the Pictish houses - which have been so often described by the Antiquariain Societies - so it is useless for me to attempt a description of it -

Mr Alexander Doull Bylbster Mr Alexander Taylor Bylbster 019 This is the site of one of the many "Pictish Houses" which are in this neighbourhood, and there is nothing of importance to be said concerning it further than what has already been said of others in the district, only I may mention that while Mr Doull the farmer here, was removing some stones from this cairn for building purposes, he came upon an urn situated in the centre of a stone coffin, of the usual description, and in removing the slabs which formed the cist, he broke the urn. He also found a bronze shoe buckle in this cairn, and a great quantity of human bones, the bones were in very small pieces, and some of them calcined. Mr Doull says that the shoe buckle and many of the pieces of bones were sent to the Edinburgh Museum by the late Dr. [Doctor] Sinclair of Wick, he having given them to the Doctor for that purpose.
