PICT'S HOUSE (Remains of) | Pictish House (Remains of) | Revd [Reverend] Mr Gunn F.C. [Free Church] Manse Watten Mr John Waters, Achingale Mr C. Sutherland, Pennyland |
018 | Only a small portion of this Pictish house remains, the greater part of it having been removed some years ago. It was intended to have levelled it all to the ground, but the unearthing of a stone coffin or cist containing human remains deterred the farmer from wholly removing all traces of one of the finest Broughs in the district. The portion which is left standing contains more human remains which will no doubt remain there for some time to come - From descriptions received I may state that the skeleton and coffin or cist were of large dimensions, being upwards of 7 feet long - near the skull was found a small comb of deerhorn - which I have in my possession - A spring of fine water is in the side of this Picts house - which may have been used by its inhabitants - The structure of this dwelling was similar in every respect to the Pictish houses - which have been so often described by the Antiquariain Societies - so it is useless for me to attempt a description of it - |
