005 | Is a Seaport town, and Market Town & Burgh of Barony situated upon the North side of Caithness, having a population of over 4000. The town has a few very good buildings and a number of Streets well laid out suitable for traffic, Thurso River enters the sea at the North East corner of the town, there is a small harbour suited for Coal vessels and such like, The principal branch of work carried on about the town is the cuting and dressing of pavement. It is said that Thurso derived its name from Horsa, a Saxon general who had landed at the water-mouth of that town, in the fifth century. Its Gaelic name is Inver-Horsa, the mouth of a river or Stream being termed Inver in that language, so that there are [Continued on page 146] |
