[Description Continued] A most desperate engagement followed, which terminated in the defeat and flight of the Caithness-men, who were pursued with considerable slaughter as far as Downreay, about three miles. It (the conflict) is to this day called "Ruoig Haunsaid", i.e. the Sandside Chase". There are several Cairns which have every appearance of being Tumuli at the base of Cnoc na Moine and at the Achins - but as I can get no one to confirm me in my opinion of them and as I did not examine any of them to see if the contained human remains - I thought it useless to put them in the plan. On the Farm of Upper Dounreay are - or rather were for some of them have been removed - several standing stones - said to mark the spot where some of the combatants fell. |
