Co. [County] of Caithness -- Parish of Halkirk
[Note Ach Hacon] -- Hacon is a corruption of Hacou. Earl Hacou was one of the Earls of Orkney in 1100
along with Earl Magnus. '' We have no tradition concerning Earl Hacou. The
only mention of his name is preserved by the two following particulars:- There
is at the Milton of Leurarie in the parish of HalKirk, in Caithness, a field called Auchtu Hacou,
or Hacou's field, and near it there is another field called *Croit na Hblanich*, or the field of the
Scots. If there was a battle there we have no account of it; but it is very probable that two armies
encamped there''. See ''Torfeus' History of Caithness'' Page 92 [initialled] G.R.
* Croit na Hblanich is not now known.
This Earl Hacou was he who caused the death of St. Magnus
in the Isle of Eglisha where they appointed to meet, to a conference in the year 1110
each having two ships. Earl Hacou, however did not stand

Ach-Hacou Continued [from page 5]
Stand to his agreement but [instead] of two, he brought eight well armed ships, which showed that he was of hostile intention. Earl [Magnus] followers were resolved to defend there master by force of arms when they saw he was betrayed. ''But Earl Magnus piously [dissuaded] them from offering the least opposition to save him.'' After a little conference between the two Earls and their followers "St Magnus" was condemned to death, and fell by the hand of one Lifolfus, Earl Hacou's Cook; who was compelled to act the part of executioner. ''Earl Hacou after having got a charter on the half of Orkney from the King of Norway he slew all the King of Norway's officers that managed Earl Magnus' estate and took possession of all Orkney''. Earl Hacou is supposed to have died in the year 1136.''

This is the Remains of one of the Ancient Strongholds of the locality from the appearance of that, that remains it must have been a well fortified place: the wall average a thickness of about nine, feet, without any appearance of a window or other aperture Save a few very narrow ones as if for Shooting through. A stone stair leads - from what appears to have been on a level with the second floor herein, to that of the third "Story" - straight. The out worKs of this "Castle" are all destroyed. To whom this belonged, the date of it's erection, or by whom it was founded is entirely unKnown.
Human remains were discovered by the excavation of the outworks. Proprietor Sir. J.G. Tollemache Sinclair Bart. [Baronet] |

The site of the residence of Bishop Adam one of the ancient Bishops of Caithness who was burned in a small house adjacent by a lawless "mob" who were enraged because of some additional taxes that the Bishop was imposing on them; this occurred on the 13th September 1222. The Bishop's parents are not Known for he was a foundling.
This atrocity, Earl John of Brawl Castle was supposed to have sanctioned, and even encouraged, and therefore through revenge he was murdered by a drunken "Mob" in Thurso in the year 1231.

The greater part of this cairn has been removed and nothing remains but a circular heap of earth and stones. nothing of any importance was found in it
It differed very much in construction from those which have already been mentioned - The cells, instead of being like the rest, regularly built - were each formed with two huge stones placed on their ends - and one of nearly an equal size placed horizontally on them. - thus:-
[sketch inserted]
And from descriptions I have received I fancy, had the Earth been carefully - cleared away - the framework wd [would] have had something like this appearance [sketch inserted]
There was nothing but burnt Human bones and red ashes found in it - Might it not have had something to do with Druidical worship? -
The frame work I think strongly resembles a miniature Druidl. [Druidical] Circle - |

The origin of the name is from the fact of a duel being fought near it which resulted in the death of one of the Combatants. In September 1710 at the annal Court in Thurso among the many gentlemen present were Sinclair Esq of Olrig and Innes, Esq of Sandside Ph [Parish] of Reay After the business of the Court was all over they all repaired to one of the Inns in the town and spent the rest of the day drinKing While there, Sinclar, a man of a quarrelsome disposition insulted Innes. Innes was an old and infirm man - so his son who was at that time a youth of 18 remonstrated with Sinclar of Olrig for the treatment he gave his father - this resulted in a challenge from Sinclar - The Principals and their seconds - met at a place called Tongside about 7 miles south from Thurso - Their weapons were swords; and after fighting for some - over

[Continued from page 97]
Some time, William Innes, who was an expert swordsman, gave his [antagonist] a wound, of which he died in the course of an hour - On this he and his [second?] immediately fled the country Innes went to Germany where he joined [the] Army and rose to the ranK of Captain - The Widow of the deceased [?] a criminal process against them before the Sheriff of Caithness, for [murder?] but in consequence of the absence of the Parties, it was not brought to any [decision?] After the lapse of a few years, Innes and Sinclair his second both reveived a [pardon] and returned to Caithness
The Above account of the Duel I partly received from Captain Gunn of [B?] whose Grandfather was a great friend Innes of Sandside - and whose Grand [uncle?] (Sandside's Factor) was present at the Duel - and partly from Calder's History of Caithness - I also read a copy of the "Execution of Officer citing Witnesses against Sandside for the slaughter of Olrig in Duel - Sept September [?].
The original is in the possession of Mr Sinclar of Forss - It was found [among] some old papers in the House of Westfield -
The Duel was fought at the House of Tongside which at that time stood about 25 chains south of the present houses - No trace [of] the house is to be seen but the present tenant, Alexander Gray can point out the Exact site - and where the duel was fought - |

This Battle was fought in 1594 between the Clans Gunn and McIvers. The latter is said to have been encamped on an eminence near Pulleyhour, where the remains of a circular embankment is still to be seen and is pointed out as - Site of Camp, Another of the same is said to have stood about a quarter of a mile to the east, the site of which has been shown to me, by R. McLeod Pulleyhour, See descriptive remarks on Camp No 2. The McIvers were Stationed at Camp No 1 when a division of the Gunns advanced to the Pulleyhour Ford, and Sent there Sharp Shooters to intercept them, the Gunns however caused them to retreat to the summit of the hill, where, when they were engaged, hand to hand, a Second division of the Clan Gunn, who forded the river below Longside, came unobserved to the rear of their enemy, who expected no danger from that quarter. The McIvers were nearly all killed, with their chief; who fell among the first. This Battle field was pointed out to [continued on page 146] |

This has, very probably, been a Pict's house, altho; [although] it was
given to me as a camp. This one has been removed many
years ago, and very few of the present inhabitants, have
seen it. but from R. McLeod's description of it (who believes
it was the same at No 1) and from the fact of the human
remains being found in it, I think there can be no doubt
about it's having been a Picts house. Mr. Gunn Braehour
says he has read many accounts, and heard many
of the battle, but never heard nor saw anything
about a Camp being there, except by the present
Inhabitants of Pullyhour. [initialled] G.R.

This Hospital, Supposed to have been built by St Magnus, Stood a few feet south west of the old Chapel, of that name, at Spittal, which, as well as the Hospital, was supported by that individual with an endowment of lands. It is also said that the endowment was increased by Earl Ronald, another of the earls of Orkney, the same individual who was the originator and benefactor of the Kirkwall Cathedral, in memory of St Magnus. For many years the Clan Gunn held, hereditary, the Governorship, and management of this Chapel, and Hospital, but about the middle of the 16th century, that power was taken from them, by the united Clans Keith, Sinclair, and Mackay, with whom they were continually at variance. Up to the end of the eighteenth century the Gunns are said to have carried their dead from all parts of the County, as well as the Kildonan district of the Sutherland County, in order to be interred in this Chapel, of Spittal.
"The lands mortified in support of this Hospital was swallowed up at the Reformation". See Notes, Torfeus' History Page 92. There is nothing of the Hospital, now to be seen, but Mr Gunn farmer Braehour says, he has seen part

This name applies to a large stone which is situated close to the Mybster Inn, it has every appearance of being a natural rocK, but is generally supposed to be one of the Standing Stones marKing the site of a grave. Mr William Sutherland, BlacKsmith, Mybster, says, that the old name for this stone was "Clach Ghlaise", The stone has been split by a shot which was put in by the said William Sutherland some few years ago. |

Three large stones situated in the Mybster district, and near the place called Balvedavist. These stones are supposed to marK the site of graves - similar in every respect to the ones at Halsary & else where in the parish of Watten. I cannot get any very reliable information in connection with them, but, "Torfeus" in his "History of Caithness", mentions some standing stones at a place called "Achutibist", when speaKing of those at Halsary. Now there is no such place in this neighbourhood as "Achutibist", but, as these are the only standing stones in this district, and, as there is a place adjacent called Balvedavist, I am of opionion that it is this place he means. The stones mentioned above, though once standing, are now all lying flat, or nearly so, on the ground. A rough sketch of the stones is given on margin. |
