Some time, William Innes, who was an expert swordsman, gave his [antagonist] a wound, of which he died in the course of an hour - On this he and his [second?] immediately fled the country Innes went to Germany where he joined [the] Army and rose to the ranK of Captain - The Widow of the deceased [?] a criminal process against them before the Sheriff of Caithness, for [murder?] but in consequence of the absence of the Parties, it was not brought to any [decision?] After the lapse of a few years, Innes and Sinclair his second both reveived a [pardon] and returned to Caithness
The Above account of the Duel I partly received from Captain Gunn of [B?] whose Grandfather was a great friend Innes of Sandside - and whose Grand [uncle?] (Sandside's Factor) was present at the Duel - and partly from Calder's History of Caithness - I also read a copy of the "Execution of Officer citing Witnesses against Sandside for the slaughter of Olrig in Duel - Sept September [?].
The original is in the possession of Mr Sinclar of Forss - It was found [among] some old papers in the House of Westfield -
The Duel was fought at the House of Tongside which at that time stood about 25 chains south of the present houses - No trace [of] the house is to be seen but the present tenant, Alexander Gray can point out the Exact site - and where the duel was fought -
