STANDING STONES [Balvedavist] | Standing Stones Standing Stones Standing Stones |
Mr William Sutherland, Mybster. Mr James Sutherland Mybster Inn, Mr Donald Munro, Mybster. |
023 | Three large stones situated in the Mybster district, and near the place called Balvedavist. These stones are supposed to marK the site of graves - similar in every respect to the ones at Halsary & else where in the parish of Watten. I cannot get any very reliable information in connection with them, but, "Torfeus" in his "History of Caithness", mentions some standing stones at a place called "Achutibist", when speaKing of those at Halsary. Now there is no such place in this neighbourhood as "Achutibist", but, as these are the only standing stones in this district, and, as there is a place adjacent called Balvedavist, I am of opionion that it is this place he means. The stones mentioned above, though once standing, are now all lying flat, or nearly so, on the ground. A rough sketch of the stones is given on margin. |
