There remains to be seen at the present day two of these ancient places of abode, on the Northern portion of the island, district of Netherton. The larger of the two is near the extreme north and Composed of a Cairn of Stones about 30 yds [yards] in diameter, and rising to a height of about 15 feet. The other is a small mound over grown with grass, on the margin of the sea banK fronting the "Goags of Bagwa" From these remnants of antiquity, it is evident that the island of stroma was inhabited by the ancient Britons, prior to the period of occupation by the Scandinavians. |

The name is generally applied to the Grave Yard itself. Within the latter there is still standing the ruins of a building, which was erected by Kennedy the pirate for the interment of his family about the Year 1677. He having landed and settled on the island a few years prior to that period The vaulted chamber is still entire, but no vestige of remains is there now. After Kennedy's death and burial, his remains were used as a drum - i,e, his belly - by his Son, being his chief Amusement to Kill time in his insulated home. This is spoken of as a well authenticated fact, the saying having been handed down from father to son to the present generation. The petrifaction of the bodies placed in this vault was caused by the peculiar properties of the rocK upon which they were deposited |

002 |
The extreme northern-most point of a small peninsula, of about 6 acres pasture land. on which in the days of Roman Catholicism Stood a Chapel at the South side. It appears from the still visible outline of a Fosse or ditch near the remains of the Chapel Slanting across longitudinally, meeting the Sea on both sides, that this headland was at one period completely severed from the main land - from such a Circumstance, it is highly probable that the buildings which at one time existed thereon were used as a means of defence against the aggressive pursuits of an enemy. - It is bounded by a cliff all around which reaches the height of 100 feet on the North Side. |

[Note] --John O' Groats House, a quondam famous domicile, in the
parish of Canisbay, on the flat downy shore of the Pentland
firth, about 1 1/2 mile west of Duncansbay-head in Caithness
-shire. Not a fragment of the building remains, except a few
of the lower stones of the foundation, or, if Dr [Doctor] Mac-culloch is
to be credited, not even that but only "a piece of green turf, as
flat and as bare as the bacK of ones hand." John O' Groat's
house is said to have been founded under the following cir-
-cumstances:- During the reign of James IV. a Lowlander
of the name of Groat - or according to some versions of the
legend, a Dutchman of the name of John de Groot - along
with his brother, arrived in Caithness, bearing a letter from
the King, which recommended them to the gentlemen of
the County. They procured land at this remote spot,
Settled, and became the founders of families."

[Continued from page 84]
When the race of Groat had increased to the amount of eight different branches,
the amity which had hitherto characterized them was unfortunately interrupted
One night, in the course of some festivity, a quarrel arose as to who had the best
right to sit at the head of the table next the door. High words ensued, and the ruin
of the whole family, by their injudicious dissension, seemed at hand. In this
emergency, one of them named John, rose, and having stilled their wrath by
soft language, assured them that at their next meeting he would settle the point
at issue to the satisfaction of all. Accordingly, he erected upon the extreme point
of their territory an octagonal building, having a door and window at every side.
and furnished with a table of exactly the same shape and when the next family
festival was held, he desired each of his Kin to enter at his own door, and take
the Corresponding seat at the table. The perfect equality of this arrangement
satisfied all, and the former good humour of the fraternity was restored.

Bucholly Castle [Continued from page 171]
A FreswicK are to be seen the ruins of an old castle, called Bucholie Castle. It seems to
be of very great antiquity. Pennant in his tour says that it was inhabited by a Danish
nobleman of the name of Suenus Asteilf in the twelfth century. It is situated
on a high rocK, almost surrounded by the sea, and appears to have been a place
of Considerable strength. -- (Extract Statistical Account Ph [Parish] Canisbay) |
