Earney Hillock Pictish House (Remains of) |
Mr Alexander Daws, Bowermadden

012 |
This name applies to a small mound which at first sight one would suppose to be a natural hillock, but upon going to its summit, evident traces of its having been a "Pictish House" are to be seen. The large flagstones which formed the roof of this building are now embedded in the ground shewing about 8 or 10 inches of their edges above the surface, & the surface, & the summit is slightly hollow through the roof having tumbled in. This house has never been opened up and in consequence nothing can be said of its interior. There is a superstitious notion in the minds of some of the people in the neighbourhood of this mound in connection with it. They believe it to be the dwelling of fairies &.c. &.c. and one woman told me that they were to be seen playing on the tops of it every night. |

The tradition as to the origin of this name is
as follows. Viz:- that during the time of the
disturbances in Caithness with the Norwegians,
that this hillock was used as a look-out post,
and that a man Sinclair was appointed to
attend to this duty.
The mound was named after him. |

A large Standing Stone, in the district of Bower-Tower near Brabstardorran, Supposed to be a Sepulchral monument. The following is an extract from Calder's History of Caithness Page 44.
"It is Supposed that the tall-standing stone near Brabster-dorran, in the parish of Bower, was erected in memory of Liot, and that it indicates the spot where he was buried. This supposition derives Some confirmation from the circumstances that the stone was anciently called "Stone Lud", which would seem to be a corruption of stone Liot or Liot's Stone. There can be no doubt, however that it is a sepulchral monument, The doctrine of Odin commanded it as a sacred duty to stones of this description in memory of the brave"
Liot was one of the Earls of Orkney and Caithness about the middle of the 10th century. |

|
012 |
This mound was partly opened in 1871, at which time, a Stone coffin, containing Human remains was found in it; also a kind of jug roughly made of clay or stone. Mr. Murray F.C. [Free Church] Schoolmaster was present when the things were found. He Says the coffin contained a few well preserved teeth, part of a Skull, thigh bones, &c. The jug was carried away by a friend of Mr. Murrays from Aberdeen. While examining the cairn, I found part of a thigh bone, which had been broken to pieces with stones, also part of a scull and other bones. This building Seems to have been generally composed of large flags many of which are Still to be seen Standing, as if forming a number of apartments. |
