STONE LUD | Stone Lud | Calder's History of Caithness Mr. P. Finlayson Achorn Mr. A. Cormack Mr. J Waters |
012 | A large Standing Stone, in the district of Bower-Tower near Brabstardorran, Supposed to be a Sepulchral monument. The following is an extract from Calder's History of Caithness Page 44. "It is Supposed that the tall-standing stone near Brabster-dorran, in the parish of Bower, was erected in memory of Liot, and that it indicates the spot where he was buried. This supposition derives Some confirmation from the circumstances that the stone was anciently called "Stone Lud", which would seem to be a corruption of stone Liot or Liot's Stone. There can be no doubt, however that it is a sepulchral monument, The doctrine of Odin commanded it as a sacred duty to stones of this description in memory of the brave" Liot was one of the Earls of Orkney and Caithness about the middle of the 10th century. |
