This parish formerly applied to the whole of the northern part of the Islannd of Bute, but in 1844 the parish of North Bute was disjoined from it & erected into a separate and distinct Civil & Ecclesiastical Parish. Rothesay Ph. [Parish] is now situated in the centre of the Island of Bute and is bounded on the North West and West by the parish of North Bute; on the North East by the Firth of Clyde; on the north west by Rothesay Bay; and on the west & south west by the parish of Kingarth. The ancient Gaelic name of this parish, according to the writer of the Old Statistical Account was Cilla Bhrui, Signifying "the church of St Brohs" this seems never to have been its proper name. The present name is derived from the Gaelic Rother Suidhr. "Circular Seat", or the place where courts were held and justice dispensed. The shore is in general shelving rock and gravel and is neither bold or flat, the only bays in this parish are Scalpsie on the South and Rothesay on the North East |

[Continued from Page 1]
the latter is remarkably beautiful, being screened all around with a gentle variegated slope, having the town & harbour at its head, and very extended lines of mansions & Villas along its sides; and affords the finest anchorage in the west of Scotland. In stormy weather a hundred vessels may be seen riding at Anchor which have found an easy entrance to it from the Firth of Clyde. The Royal Burgh is situated at the head of a bay of the same name on the north east side of the Island of Bute and is the chief town of the county of Bute. It is governed by a Provost, two bailies, a dean of guilds, treasurer, and twelve councillors, and now unites with the county of Bute in sending a Member to Parliament. Besides the Burgh Courts, the Sheriff and Justice of Peace Courts & County meetings are held here. Bute being one of the ancient possessions of the house of Stuart, the castle of Rothesay continued to be a place of their occasional residence after they came to the throne on 12th Jany [January] 1401 King Robert III erected the town, which has been previously made a burgh of barony, into a Royal Burgh, & endowed it with a considerable landed territory. Its privileges were confirmed & extended by King James VI by charter dated 19th February 1585. The Antiquities of the parish are the Royal Castle of Rothesay (204.6-9) three British forts (on 204.10 & 215.5 )ruins of St Mary's Ch. [Church] (204.6( site of St Brides Ch. [Chapel] (204.6.9) ruins of the Royal Chapel (204.6.9) and the Chapel at Kilmory (215.1) the remains of Kilmory Castle (204.13) two cairns (204.10 & 215.5) and Tumuli (on 204.13 & 215.5). The town is lighted with gas & is well supplied with water - the Marquis of Bute is the superior and the population is considered close on 6000. |

"The church of St Mary of Rothesay, the walls of the choir of which yet remains close to the present parish church, was probably built in 1296, the windows being of the form then in use. It was one of the Cathedral churches of the Isles during the times of Popery and was the sole Cathedral of that see during the times of Protestant Episcopacy. The area of the choir & nave were used for interment by the principal heritors. The nave was taken down in 1692, when a new church on the present site was erected out of the ruins. This church also was taken down in 1795, and the present church then erected." New Stat [Statistical] Account See next page |

St Mary's Church Cont. [Continued] |
|
|
"The Church of St Mary of Rothesay, supposed to have been built in the 13th century & after the Reformation used as the Catherdral Church of the Isles, stood about a mile south of the burgh of Rothesay. The Choir still standing is 26 ft. [feet] 10 ins [inches] in length by 17ft [feet] 1 in [inch] in breadth within the walls. & the Nave remained in 1692 was 81 ft [feet] by 22. In 1692 a church was built immediately on the north of the nave & in 1695 it was taken down, and another, the present parish church, built in its stead." - Originies Parochiales.
"The Ancient Church of Rothesay was dedicated to the Virgin Mary: & was originally a Chapel subordinate to Kingarth professed for a short time by the monks of Paisley. At the close of 13th Century, it appears on record as an independant parsonage & afterwards became one of the Cathedral Churches of the Diocese of the Isles & was the only one during the period of Protestant Episcopacy. In 1575 its temporalities were given by James VI to the collegiate Ch; [Church] of Restaing near Leith; & at the Reformation, they were transferred to the Chapel Royal of Stirling. In 1617, the parson of Rothesay was by Act of Parliament, made subdean of the Isles. - and in 1639 it was annexed to the Presbytery of Dunoon" - Fullarton's Gazetteer. |

A small hill commanding a fine prospect of the town and Bay &c. till very lately, the remains of a chapel dedicated to St. Bride or Bridget stood on the summit of the hill, it was removed to make way for the present building a dwelling house with a tower on the east side, erected by the town council, who also at the same time ornamented the hill with terraced walks for the use of the public.
"Chapel-hill on the summit of which, till very lately, were the remains of the old chapel of St Bride, so called from being dedicated to the Virgin St Bride or Bridget, a female saint for whom the people of Scotland and Ireland in general, and those of the Western Isles in particular, entertained the most superstitious veneration. To her the greatest number of churches in the Western Isles were dedicated; from her the people had oracular responses; by the divinity of Bridget they swore one their most solemn oaths; To Bridget they dedicated the first day of February, and in the evening of this festival performed many strange ceremonies of a druidical and most superstitious kind." "The Castle of Rothesay consists of a circular
Court with four Round towers of great strength
& of unknown antiquity, & of a more modern building
erected on the north east between two of the towers
by King Robert II or III, the whole surrounded with
a moat. It appears in record in the year 1228,
when Olave, Prince of Skye, accompanied by
Haco Ospae a Norwegian prince, came from
Norway to Bute and laid siege to the principal
fortress of the island, where Haco Ospae was killed
by a stone thrown from the wall. In 1263 during
the expedition of King Haco, the Norwegians
educed a fortress in Bute, which, though not
named, was most probably the Castle of Rothesay"

Between the Great Stair and the chapel there is the foundation of a house 34 feet by 27; it had a fire place in the centre, formed by 4 free stones on edge, within which, (when the castle, about 30 years ago, by the Marquis of Bute's Orders, was examined, and cleaned out by about 80 men)was found peat ashes, near the top of the rubbish was found a small coin of King James VI"
Betwixt the Chapel and the entrance of the S. E. [South East] tower, there is the foundation of a small building; a range of buildings, 74 feet by 33, extended along the south side of the court; the east end of this range has a neat hewn Stone base, and appears to have had a wide gate; about the middle of the building, there is a paved fire place, about 7 feet Square; there was a small fireplace near the east end, and another in the apartment at the west end. There was also a range of buildings along the west side of the court. |

Close to the front wall near the north end, is the draw well, and behind this building is a Sally port through the court, which appears to have been built up at an early date. The workmen, in clearing out the rubbish, found a few old Scots pence and groats of the reign of James VI and of Charles I and II; a small copper coin of Louis XIII. of France, 2 or 3 brass counters - one of them washed with silver and a brass farthing token of the Bull Head Tavern, in Este Smithfield probably dropped by some of Cromwell's troops when they garrosoned the castle; a gold coin of James II was also found. "greatly more obscure circumstances, but its original is now hid in the mist of ages. It first comes into historical notice in 1228; when Husbec, Norwegian chief feudatory King of the Isles, and Grandson of Somerled, beseiged it, but he was mortally wounded, and soon after died. Immediately afterwards, Olave, King of Man, who was at that time a fugitive from his own dominions, then assumed the command, and in a short time procured a recognition of the title of King of the Isles from Haco, King of Norway, who alleged that Bute, Arran, and the Cumbraes, belonged to the Hebrides, which his predecessor, Magnus Barefoot, had conquered. Olave being provided with a fleet of eighty ships by Haco, and with troops, came to Bute, and laid siege to the Castle, which was at that time commanded by a Steward of Scotland, who ranked as an Earl of the Kingdom. It was defended nobly by the Scots, who, among the means of defence, poured down upon their enemies boiling pitch and lead; but in order to protect themselves against so warm a reception, they prepared a covering of boards, under the shelter of which they undermined the walls; and thus gained an entrance after three days of severe conflict with the besieged, and found in it a rich booty. The Norwegians in this attack lost about 300 men, before the castle was taken. Having been recovered from the northern invaders, it was again taken by them in 1263 and retaken by the Scots shortly after the Battle of Largs. During the inglorious reign of John Balliol, it was occupied by the English; but in 1311 it submitted Robert Bruce. King Robert II visited the castle in 1376 and again in 1381, when he appears to have staid a considerable time. His court consisted of his eldest son Prince John (afterwards called Robert III) Earl of Carrick & Steward of Scotland, his 2nd son Robert Earl of Fife & Monteith, William Bishop of St Andrews, William Earl of Douglas; John de Carryk, the Chancellor, James de Lyndesay, the King's grandson, Robert de Erskyne, and Hugh de Eglynton, Knight. Robert III died in the Castle of Rothesay on the 14th April 1406. On the death of this monarch the castle was committed to the Keeping of the family of Bute, and it became their mansion though it was not untill August 1498 that the head of that family was constituted hereditary Governor and Constable of it, an office which still continues in the family, & is held by the present Marquis." "There was formerly, in Bishop Street, where the Rothesay Parish School now stands, a residence called the Bishop's House, consisting of a principal part, and a long range of other considerable buildings to the eastward of it. The principal house was demolished in 17- that a street might be made through the Bishop's Orchard. The different buildings, with the garden and orchard, appeared to have been the property of a family of greater opulance than that of any of the Burgesses; But when and by whom, built is unknown. They were the private property of Bishop Graham who resided there." - Wilson's Guide, Page 176.

Sheet 204-10 -- Parish of Rothesay
"Barone Hill was once the scene of a bloody conflict. In 1334, while Allan Lisle held the governorship of Bute on behalf of Edward Baliol, the Bute
men of their accord rose en masse to assist their old master - the Lord High Steward - who was then besieging the castle of Dunoon. Lisle having
been made aware of their movements, immediately summoned together what force he could. The enemy, from the circumstance of their assembling
in a hasty manner, and consequently provided with few or no arms, were struck with awe at the appearance of men furnished with all the instruments
of war; and maKing a speedy retreat, they took refuge on the summit of Barone. Here they found ample materials, in the ruins of an old fortification,
with which to discomfit their adversaries, who madly pursued them until retreat became worse than actual engagement. The Bute men took advantage
of this, and commenced pouring down stones upon their assailants with such effect that numbers of them were Killed. The arms of the Slain
fell an easy prey to the men of Bute, and with these they pursued the survivors. At length a general engagement took place on the plain beneath.
Lisle and the bravest of his men perished, and others were prisoners. The Victors severed Lisle's head from his body, and presented it to their
Master as a trophy" - Wilson's Guide

A small mound consisting chiefly of a number of loose stones grown over with grass. Mr Blair of Lochly says that it was much more entire in his younger days when he was farmer of chapelton, on which farm it is situated. A great many stones were removed from it for the construction of the weir at the church, and in the removing of them an Ancient hand mill or quern and pieces of cross were found also somearrow heads, he also says that it was handed down by tradition as being a fort or watch tower & that a battle had been fought here. This tradition I can get no one to corroborate Mr Muir, from its low possition, believes it to be one of the ancient Cairns tumuli, From its appearance I would say it is one of the old Cairn Hill forts are invariably on commanding possitions, and not in hollows as in the case with this. |

A little from the ruins on the N.E. [North East] side is a large common land stone having a small hole chiseled out about for 8 inches in diameter by 6 inches in depth. Respecting this stone, Mr Blair says that it is handed down by tradition, as being the font where children were wont to be baptised. From the name of the farm it would appear that a chapel had at some remote period been here, but no tradition exists in the locality respecting such farther than that in reference to the Font Stone. |

Tumulus & 2 Standing Stones (Site of) |
George McFie, Barone, Rothesay |
204.13 |
On this farm in the 2nd field South from the Steading is the site of a Tumulus and 2 Standing Stones. They were removed about 35 years ago by George McFie of Barone who was then farmer of Ballycurry. In levelling the mound or small hillock on which the Standing Stones stood, 2 small earthern urns were found containing ashes. This discription so far corrobates the Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBrides opinion concerning the Standing Stones of the island. He believes them to be Monuments over the dead and not the remains of Druidical temples, as is the general historical opinion. See Druids Temple in N.S. for North Bute. A slight evidence of the mound is still traceable on the ground but is too little to be shaded. |

The small tower attached to part of the offices here, is the only remains now left of an ancient castle. It is ruinious and stands about 8 feet high, the walls are about the thickness of a common building and appears to have been built without mortar. The faint track of a wall is discernable round by the edge of the trees and along the top of rock.
"Kilmorie Castle which consisted of several towers and buildings, was the residence of the Jamiesons of Kilmorie, Coroners or Crowners of Bute, and is now in Ruins." New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] |

A British fort situated on a tolerably commanding position on the farm of Scalpsie. The inner slope or wall is constructed of a mass of loose stones or boulders partly grown over with grass. The outer slope is natural partly assisted by art. Mr McGilp the farmer says it is handed down by tradition that a battle had been fought here betwixt the Scotch and Danes, and that Tumulus or circle which is a little to the east had been the place of internment for the fallen. |

Relative to the Tumulus so far as I am informed by Mr Muir of MecKnoch, it had been a large Cairn of stones, and was removed by his father in law about 50 years ago for the saKe of cultivating it, but a stone cist being found in it, when almost demolished, it was let alone and has never yet been ploughed. The evidence on the ground is quite distinct although not shadeable. Farther information cannot be gleaned for these 2 objects. Mr Muir the Factor and the Gentlemen of the place seem to be quite ignorant of the Antiquities of the island in general: |
