TUMULUS (Site of) [Ballycurry] Tumulus & 2 Standing Stones (Site of) George McFie, Barone, Rothesay 204.13 On this farm in the 2nd field South from the Steading is the site of a Tumulus and 2 Standing Stones. They were removed about 35 years ago by George McFie of Barone who was then farmer of Ballycurry. In levelling the mound or small hillock on which the Standing Stones stood, 2 small earthern urns were found containing ashes. This discription so far corrobates the Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBrides opinion concerning the Standing Stones of the island. He believes them to be Monuments over the dead and not the remains of Druidical temples, as is the general historical opinion. See Druids Temple in N.S. for North Bute. A slight evidence of the mound is still traceable on the ground but is too little to be shaded.
