204.06 This was formerly a rock but is now built over with sloping masonery and forming a kind of Battery having one of the trophies of the Crimean War placed on it. In olden times it was a place of punishment, and in 1673 the last execution for witchcraft took place on it.
"The Gallow's Craig, a small rock jutting outward at the junction of Gallowgate and Argyle Streets, or directly opposite the entrance to the West Free Church, - a noted place in olden times, and one of punishment, as its name denotes.
