204.06 A small hill commanding a fine prospect of the town and Bay &c. till very lately, the remains of a chapel dedicated to St. Bride or Bridget stood on the summit of the hill, it was removed to make way for the present building a dwelling house with a tower on the east side, erected by the town council, who also at the same time ornamented the hill with terraced walks for the use of the public.
"Chapel-hill on the summit of which, till very lately, were the remains of the old chapel of St Bride, so called from being dedicated to the Virgin St Bride or Bridget, a female saint for whom the people of Scotland and Ireland in general, and those of the Western Isles in particular, entertained the most superstitious veneration. To her the greatest number of churches in the Western Isles were dedicated; from her the people had oracular responses; by the divinity of Bridget they swore one their most solemn oaths; To Bridget they dedicated the first day of February, and in the evening of this festival performed many strange ceremonies of a druidical and most superstitious kind."
