This parish formerly applied to the whole of the northern part of the Islannd of Bute, but in 1844 the parish of North Bute was disjoined from it & erected into a separate and distinct Civil & Ecclesiastical Parish. Rothesay Ph. [Parish] is now situated in the centre of the Island of Bute and is bounded on the North West and West by the parish of North Bute; on the North East by the Firth of Clyde; on the north west by Rothesay Bay; and on the west & south west by the parish of Kingarth. The ancient Gaelic name of this parish, according to the writer of the Old Statistical Account was Cilla Bhrui, Signifying "the church of St Brohs" this seems never to have been its proper name. The present name is derived from the Gaelic Rother Suidhr. "Circular Seat", or the place where courts were held and justice dispensed. The shore is in general shelving rock and gravel and is neither bold or flat, the only bays in this parish are Scalpsie on the South and Rothesay on the North East |
