"In the upper end of the South wood of Lenihuline (i.e. the holy field) about half a mile from the road, there is a curious cairn, or mound of stones, called Cairn-baan (i.e. the white cairn) in the form of a cross, which shews that it must have been constructed in christian times. The full length of the cross from West to East, was 200 feet, and the breadth about 15 feet; the transept, or cross 47 feet in length, by 30 feet, but the head, or east end beyond the transept was removed, when the wood was enclosed, as it projected beyond the wall. There is a small cell in the west end of the cross, into which the penitent could creep when at his devotions; It was supposed that there was a range of similar cells along the centre of the mound, but on a thorough examination made some years ago, it was found not to be the case" Wilson's Guide p [page] 78.
There is no sufficient Evidence of shape to warrant the above statement and deduction - nor is there any aperture worth calling a "Cell". [Initialled] JB Lt.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel] |

This fort is ploughed up on the south side, and a stone wall runs through it, it is situate on a low flat neck of land, and nothing in its situation would indicate its ever being a stronghold, or a place of defence, Nevertheless tradition assigns it as the site of a "Danish Castle" with which tradition, Revd. [Reverend] Mr. McBride concurs.
If this be the site of a Fort - the Rings of Earth on 203.8 and 12 are similar - they are too small for Forts unless of masonry, of which there is no evidence? [Initialled] J.B. Lt.Col. [Lieutenant Colonel] |

A remarkable hill fort, This place seems to have been altered from its original appearance by the late Mr. Hamilton of Kames, who surrounded it with a stone wall, and otherwise altered its internal appearance and fixed on it, as the place of his interment, his tomb stands in the centre of the fort,
The Revd [Reverend] Mr. McBride ascribes this, (and another on the Etterick farm, near the bay of that name) to the Danes, he says they are perfectly similar to the Irish "Raths" or forts -

immediately at the N.E. A Circular stone dyke and a vallum of earth enclosing 7 standing stones, 6 of which are part of a circle although believed by the inhabitants to be a Druidical circle or Temple (it has no resemblance to that remarkable entire circle near Wigton, the stones in this instance are 22 in number and placed at equal distance on the valum or dike, with a large one in the centre.) The Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBride Port Bannatyne, who is well acquainted with a number of the antiquities, and the geology of the island, is of the opinion that this is nothing more than a tumulus (there is no mound), & he also says that the late Dr. [Doctor] Scoular and some more of the eminent Antiquarians who have lately visited this island, are of the same opinion.
"At St. Calmag's near Ettrick, there is a Druid's temple in considerable preservation & there are faint traces of several other such temples in various parts of the parish." New Stat Acct. There are 2 more of the same dimensions, but without stones, one on the farm of Dunalunt and the other on Nether Ardroscadale, they consist of a circular valum of earth, see traces and N. A vallum or bank of earth which is evidently an ancient work of art. The west & N.W. [North West] sides are naturally defended.
The inhabitants of the locality know nothing about it farther than its there to be seen But the Rev [Reverend] Alexander McBride is of the opinion that it is a tumulus, he has opened works of the same description & found them to contain human remains. This is in all likelihood one of those traces of Druidical remains spoken of in the New Stat Acct. [Statistical Account] See extract for the Druid's Temple on trace 3 of 203-4. Or otherwise it may be the remains of a small hill fort as it is situated in a tolerably commanding position not far from the sea. |

A remarkable prominent rock near the sea coast of the farm of Upper Ardroscadale. It is of an oval shape and tabulated, on the east end of it is the remains of a dry stone built wall, what the people believe to the remains of a castle or watch tower. "On the farm of Ballancrach, or Upper Ardroscadale, are the remains of an ancient Hill fort. It is situated on the top of a rock, projecting from a precipitous bank towards the sea. The walls of which only the foundation remain, are of dry stone"

203.12 |
A circular valum of earth or bank in a field north of Nether Ardroscadale, there is no tradition or information can be gleaned in the locality concerning it, farther than the Rev. [Reverend] Mr McBride, believes it to be a tumulus. It has no resemblance to the tumuli generally met with throughout the country but is more in keeping with the Druidical Circles, and probably it may be one of those as the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] makes mention of the faint traces of several Druids Circles or temples to be found in the parish. Mr. Grant to whom I have been induced to call upon by Mr. Muir, the Factor, as regarding the Antiquities of the island, believes it to be the remains of a Driuidical circle. There is no mound within the circle or ring of earth, but if any thing it is rather lower than the adjacent ground. Mr. Stewart the farmer has been here his life time, and he holds that veneration for it, that he will not allow it to be ploughed, although the best soil in in field, yet he can give no definition as to what it has been. |

Mr. Muir the farmer, the Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBride and Mr. Grant say that many human bones & relics of Sepulture, have been turned up in the stackyard behind this house [Midpark], which corroborates the fact of a chapel having been here altho' [although] not having been seen in the memory of any one now living. The cross on trace points out a little irregular lump or bank covered with grass, which Mr. Muir points out what he says to be the site of the Chapel. Fullarton in his Gazetteer says that on the islet of Inchmaroch, "The ruins of a Chapel dedicated to St. Marnock are still to be seen upon it." |

[Notes below St. Marnock's Chapel:]
"Inch Marnoc, an Island called from St. Marnoc, where appears the
ruins of a chapel, and where (according to Fordan) had been a cell of
monks."
Pennants Tour.
Mr. Muir of Barone Park has informed me, that when
the late McKinlay made a survey of the island, he found the
ruins pretty entire, and that it was the most handsome
of the Ecclesiastical ruins in the island, - It was entirely
removed by the present tenant Mr. Muir who is a very old man. |
