CIRCLE [Nether Adroscadale] Tumulus
Circle
Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBride
Mr Grant Schoolmaster Rothesay
203.12 A circular valum of earth or bank in a field north of Nether Ardroscadale, there is no tradition or information can be gleaned in the locality concerning it, farther than the Rev. [Reverend] Mr McBride, believes it to be a tumulus. It has no resemblance to the tumuli generally met with throughout the country but is more in keeping with the Druidical Circles, and probably it may be one of those as the New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] makes mention of the faint traces of several Druids Circles or temples to be found in the parish. Mr. Grant to whom I have been induced to call upon by Mr. Muir, the Factor, as regarding the Antiquities of the island, believes it to be the remains of a Driuidical circle. There is no mound within the circle or ring of earth, but if any thing it is rather lower than the adjacent ground. Mr. Stewart the farmer has been here his life time, and he holds that veneration for it, that he will not allow it to be ploughed, although the best soil in in field, yet he can give no definition as to what it has been.

[Note]
It is in fact a ring of earth and stones
with the interior depressed - a class of
ancient remains most difficult to
reason upon and consequently to name.
It cannot with propriety be called a Tumulus.
