[continued from previous page] the sea; and this agrees perfectly with the natural appearance of the island, which presents steep and precipitous banks all round the Coast. There is, indeed, a flat level space round the whole island extending from the bottom of those banks to the water's edge, but the whole of this space has been, at one time or other, Completely Covered with the sea. This is evident from the fields of sand and beds of Marl which it Contains; and if so, its appearance then would exactly agree with what its name Signifies. Its figure is very irregular &c. The shore, which is, as already Stated, flat and level for some Considerable distance from the sea, is, in some places, Sandy, as in Kames Bay, on the South-east of the [continued on next page] |

most frequently found, scattered through many districts, and Corresponding
to nearly every class of the earthen tumuli. They appear to have been the
favourite and most distinguished Sepulchral memorials of the aboriginal
races, throughout the whole 3 periods into which archaelogists divide the
long era prior to the revolutions effected by Roman civilisation and the

This grave is situated about 11 chains SE [South East] of the Monument, on Tomont End The following is an extract from a small book written by Doctor Waddell.
"She (The Lady) is said to have been a Barons Daughter and that her lover was killed at the battle of Largs shortly after which she died of a broken heart and was buried opposite the field of strife"
The grave is covered by a stone about 6 feet long and is on a brow near Lady's Bay. |

An enormous rock of Whinstone, Springing from a Steep brae, in a S. [South] Easterly direction to the sea, it has Somewhat the appearance of a Castle wall, The Statistical Acct. [Account] mentions that it reappears again on the Ayrshire Coast and runs through the whole of Galloway Shire.
Tradition attributes the formation of this and a Similar one called the Lion, to the "Deil and Fairies", and is often called in consequence, the "Deil and Faries' Dykes" |
