The houses are very neat and well built, and chiefly extend along the Shore. There are numerous handsome villas on a rising ground overlooking the village, adding much to its general appearance. There is Steam boat Communication with Glasgow daily in winter and frequently in the summer months; there is no fair nor market, and the only manufacture is weaving for the Glasgow Manufacturers: it Contains a good pier and a harbour for Small vessels, a College and 5 Churches and Chapels, with a Post Office. The Marquis of Bute is the principal proprietor |
