LAUDER PARISH Lauder [parish] Continued 005 [Continued from page 4] The parish church which formerly stood on the North of the town, fronting Thirlstane Castle, is now Situated close to the town on its S [South] West Side. Its distance is 8 miles from the Northern extremity of the parish, & 5 from the Southern extremity. It could not be more conveniently Situated, as upwards of half the population resides in the town, while few of the people, in the country have to travel to it more than 3 or 4 miles. It was built in the year 1673 & Since that period it has undergone frequent repairs, the last of which was in 1820 and though from its form, which is that of a cross, it is found to be Somewhat incommodious, especially during the Celebration in it of the Lord’s Supper - it is on the whole, substantial and tolerably well fitted up. It needs much to be heated, by means of Stoves, in winter. It Can Conveniently hold 850 persons. No free lettings in it are appropriated to the poor; but all of this description who are willing to attend may be and are gratuitously accommodated.
A handsome benefaction of 4 Silver Communion Cups, and of two massy silver plaques was granted to the church in 1677. by the noble family of Lauderdale. [Continued on page 6]
