019.08 | This Spacious edifice which Stands on a beautiful lawn on the right bank of the Leader and between that river and the town of Lauder, is the Country Family Residence of the Earl of Lauderdale. Its nucleus was a strong tower, called Lauder Fort and was built by Edward I during his invasion of Scotland, as a means of maintaining his usurped power. In 1672 a new front and wings were added and decorated, with massive balustrades and cornices, in the best taste of the age of Charles II. It is Surrounded by an extensive ParK. containing very fine old trees and in consequence of the great improvements which it has recently undergone is much admired.
