027.01 | This is the only Village in the parish, its population is upwards of 200 persons, and it is situated near the South end of the parish Extending East & West across the high road leading from Kelso to Lauder; it comprises two Churches - ( Established, & Free; A circulating library, parish school and a straight street of modern built houses - nearly all two stories high. In it are two Inns & several small shops retailing Groceries &c; Also a post office at the Schoolmaster's Ho. [House] having an arrival and dispatch of mails daily. The inhabitants are mostly engaged in agricultural pursuits and are Chiefly Feuars on the Estate of Greenknowe having a right on paying certain dues to the Superior (Fairholm Esqre, of Chapel) to cast peats in the neighbouring Moss of Greenknowe. |
