"This well had its name from the popular belief that a horse hair may be endowed with motion, if not life, by immersing it in water for a certain time, the experiment used to be tried in this well; such is the current explanation I have invariably got of this name, but on further consideration I think the plural form should be used". The plural form has consequently been adopted.
