The paish of Alvah is in the Presbytery of Turriff and Synod of Aberdeen Patron Sir G Abercrombie; It is bounded on the north by the parishes of Banff Gamrie and a detached portion of King Edward, on the east by the parish of King Edward on the South by the parish of Forglen, on the south-west by the parish of Marnoch, and on the west by the parish of Banff. The parish of Alvah is in the county of Banff and contains about 11585 statute acres. There are no detached portions of it in any other parish, neither are there detached portions of any other parish within its limits. The soil of this parish is varied, but mostly of an inferior quality; A considerable area is planted with wood, the remainder [continued on page 2] |

This is the Castle mentioned in the statistical account which belonged to the Earl of Buchan, and which was surrounded by a swamp, no remains or trace of any part of the building or ditches now remain, but the name is still preserved.
"The ruins of the ancient castle which once stood near Montblairy are levelled with the ground, and the swamp on which it stood has now become a fruitful field. The remains of what was evidently a large Cairn, situated near the edge of the wood on the East side of the Hill of Alvah. A quantity of the stones which composed it still remain, but the greater part have been removed for building purposes. Nothing authentic can be discovered of its history. On the Eastern brow of the Hill of Alvah is a large tumulus or cairn consisting chiefly of small stones and earth. It is of an elliptical form, covering an area of 20 falls, and in the centre rising to the height of 7 or 8 feet, but has never been sufficiently opened to disclose any remains of any antiquity.
