The parish of Alvah is in the county of Banff and contains about 11585 statute acres. There are no detached portions of it in any other parish, neither are there detached portions of any other parish within its limits. The soil of this parish is varied, but mostly of an inferior quality; A considerable area is planted with wood, the remainder [continued on page 2]

A quantity of the stones which composed it still remain, but the greater part have been removed for building purposes. Nothing authentic can be discovered of its history. On the Eastern brow of the Hill of Alvah is a large tumulus or cairn consisting chiefly of small stones and earth. It is of an elliptical form, covering an area of 20 falls, and in the centre rising to the height of 7 or 8 feet, but has never been sufficiently opened to disclose any remains of any antiquity.
