A Parish in the district of Cunninghame in the County of Ayr. It is bounded on the North East by the the Parishes of Neilston & Mearns, in Renfrewshire, on the East & Southeast by Fenwick, on the South by Dreghorn, on the West by Irvine and Kilwinning, on the N. [North] by Beith, and on the N. [North] and N.W. [North West] by Dunlop. Its extreme length is about 12 miles, average width about 2½.
The name is formed (according to the New Statistical Acct. [Account]) from the Surname Stewart, first used as a family distinction by Walter II in 1204. The district of Cunningham, with others in the County being the property of the crown, was from time to time united in the hands of some powerful family, and Stewarton, among others, being created a separate Lordship, became the inheritance of James, High Stewart in 1283." The antiquities of the Parish are not very numerous, and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book.
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor is there a detached portion of any other parish within this.
"Stewartoun parish had its name, from the town, where the Church stands; and the town had obviously acquired its appellation, from some Stewart, to whose designation, the common Anglo Saxon termination, teen, was added." Chamers' Caledonia. vol. 3. p 555. |

Sept. 22/56 [22 Sep 1856]
Dear Sir
In reply to
your note of the 19th.
requesting information
about the ancient grave
which was discovered in
1850 on The Farm of Waterhouse
Estate of Kennox, they to
say that it was discovered
by the projecting of part
of the stone which
formed the covering of
the grave, on The slope of
a small mound
near a stone quarry.
This stone measures |

[Left side of page continued]
5 feet by 4. The
grave [-] consists of
four stones, forming a
pit 3 feet square,
and 19 Inches in depth,
It was partly filled
with fine earth, in
which were embedded
two rudely formed
earthen Urns, containing
a few flint arrow-heads
and a quantity of
beads of various shapes,
made of a substance
known as Druids Glass,
from which I am
inclined to think
[Right hand page]
it must have
appertained to that people.
Sometime ago a
similar grave was found
near The Same spot,
containing, (what appeared
to have been) the stone
head of a hammer.
I have an idea
There are other
graves in the same
locality, and sometime
or other I shall institute

A very small farm (3 fields) with dwelling house, barn & byres - the property of Mr. Graham Barnes - It being entirely surrounded by the lands of Lainshaw, the literal meaning of its name as also the names of several adj. [adjacent] farms, and other singular circumstances, led me to suspect that this small estate before the reformation belonged to the R.C.C. [Roman Catholic Church] forming as it were 'Church with Glebe - I applied to the factors for information, they were unable to furnish any. I also saw Mr Picking, the tenant, and he pointed out the spot marked on trace as showing great indications of a small building having stood there. The color of the ground marks out a rectangular & square , very stony, and agreeing with the cardinal points. |

Sir,
I have to acknowledge re-
ceipt your letter of the 14th. inst:- [instant]
I am not aware of any write
in which Montgreenan Castle
is mentioned. I believe that
it has been uninhabited & in-
deed uninhabitable for
many centuries Since
year 1680 when the last

was forfeited (from whence it
passed to a family of the name
Stevenson) the old place has
never been occupied. How long
before that it was left vacant
I cannot say.
I called it the Old Castle
because I have always heard
it so called, & trust the old
titles design it the "Town
Fortalice." It was probably
like many of the other places in
the neighbourhood, such as [Auchenharvie] |

Auchinharvie etc, a castle of
small importance or size.
In mentioning to you the other
day that its destruction had
been completed about 1760 or 1770
from that I have led you to suppose
that it was then demolished
I believe that it had been ruinous
long before, & all that was
then done was that Mr John Stevens-
on the proprietor used it
as a quarry in building
a house at Kilwinning. I can
not now tell you from whom I've
heard this information it is
very long ago. But I will recollect

This ruin stands about 4 miles south west from stewarton. It appears to have been nearly square, and from the thickness of the walls must have been a place of great strength. The walls of three sides of the square are still standing, in some places apparently their original height. |

"The mansion house of Kennox, built by James Sommerville, about 172, Still exists, but has been extensively
added to by his successors, at different periods, It is set down amidst fine old woods
in a cuive of the water of Glazart, about 2 miles west from Stewarton. Close to the house is a Yew
tree, of remarkable size and beauty. From its dimensions it is computed to be upwards of 900 years
old, & is still vigorous. As the Yew tree, in this country, was usually planted in the immediate vicinity
of family residences, this would infer great antiquity
for the site of Kennox, formerly Crevoch"

A portion of the house of Chapeltoun presently occupied as the residence of Mr. McAlister. The following information respecting it was given to me by Mr McAlister. At a remote period the lands of Chapeltoun belonged to his ancestors and a Chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary is believed to have been here. The lands were sold to Mr Miller and the Chapel being in ruins was repaired as a farm house. The property having again been purchased by Mr. McAlister, he repaired the old building and made several additions to it, but preserving its ancient appearance some of the walls (now inside ones) are of great thickness. Mr Miller gave me the same account of it but said that though he believes this to have been formerly the Chapel, yet that it may only have been the residence of the Chaplain and that the Chapel may have been near the Chapel Hill |

A circular artificial Hill on the lands of Chapeltoun near the house. About 5 years ago Mr. McAlister raised it to its present height, by taking the earth etc. which in the course of time had slid or been trampled from its sides, and putting it on the top. while doing this a quantity of human bonees were found near the brae on the South and East sides, and also some stones which - from their appearance - Mr. McAlister thought had been exposed to the action of fire. Mr. Miller (to whom the property formerly belonged) told me that when the present road past the Chapel Hill was being formed, a quantity of bones were found and that it was supposed that a burying ground had been here. |

The ruins of this Castle stand on the west side of Clerkland Burn, a short distance North from Stewarton, all that remains is a Tower of considerable height (recently repaired) and on the East and North sides a quantity of Stones lime etc and a small portion of a wall a few feet in height. Sir J.M. Cunninghame says "There is good ground for belief that it was erected about 1540 and it was uninhabited till towards the end of the last century. It appears to have been of the ordinary style of the Scottish Castlellated residences of that date." |

On an eminence known as Cairnduff,
situated on the property of Mr. James Neilson
Provan of Peacockbank near Stewarton, there
is a large collection of stones which has
always been looked upon as a sepulchral
monument. The late proprietor Mr. John Deans
having some time ago caused a part of this
Cairn to be opened up, three urns containing
bones and relics were found deposited
in small cells near the original surface of
the ground. One of the Urns, which was
unfortunately broken before it was taken up,
appears to have been about a foot in diameter;
the other two measure about 5½ inches in
diameter and nearly six inches in height.
They appear to have been formed of very coarse
clay, but some taste has been exercised in |

in formation and zigzag lines have been
[-] or cut all round the edge or rim of
the vessel. One of the small Urns was found
laying on its side in a cell about 30 inches
square, formed with coarse flags. It was
filled with loose earth mixed with burnt
bones & ashes. The two other Urns were
inverted in the clay containing burnt bones &
ashes, appear to be places in a circle about
eight yards from the centre of the heap &
and near its extremity. On or near this circle
there are a number of small coarse flagstones
placed on the original surface of the
ground; and the earth at the bottom of the
Cairn near the centre, appears to have been
very much burnt, even to the depth of |

|
[-] inches, & is mixed with ashes & small
segments of bones. The height of the Cairn will
in the middle exceed 5 or 6 feet but it is
probable that many of the stones have been
carried off in former times for making roads
and other purposes. It is chiefly composed
of whinstone and they are mostly
large size.
No stones bearing the mark of a
hammer or chisel have been discovered. The
whole heap has been grown over with turf &
been planted trees several years
ago There is every reason to suppose that it
contains a great many more urns, as not
more than a fourth part of it has yet been examined.

"About thirty years ago, while Mr. Dean of Peacockbank was sorting out some trees in a small plantation, on Cairnduff Brae, on his property, he discovered three urns containing human bones. The urns were covered by a great quantity of Stones, forming , it is conjectured, one of those Cairns, in which the Ancient inhabitants of this Country buried their dead."
