009 ; 012 ; 013 ; 017 A Parish in the district of Cunninghame in the County of Ayr. It is bounded on the North East by the the Parishes of Neilston & Mearns, in Renfrewshire, on the East & Southeast by Fenwick, on the South by Dreghorn, on the West by Irvine and Kilwinning, on the N. [North] by Beith, and on the N. [North] and N.W. [North West] by Dunlop. Its extreme length is about 12 miles, average width about 2½.
The name is formed (according to the New Statistical Acct. [Account]) from the Surname Stewart, first used as a family distinction by Walter II in 1204. The district of Cunningham, with others in the County being the property of the crown, was from time to time united in the hands of some powerful family, and Stewarton, among others, being created a separate Lordship, became the inheritance of James, High Stewart in 1283." The antiquities of the Parish are not very numerous, and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book.
There is no portion of this parish detached, nor is there a detached portion of any other parish within this.
"Stewartoun parish had its name, from the town, where the Church stands; and the town had obviously acquired its appellation, from some Stewart, to whose designation, the common Anglo Saxon termination, teen, was added." Chamers' Caledonia. vol. 3. p 555.
