Its name is believed to have been derived from Stephen, or Steven, Son of Richard Loccard, who acquired a grant of the lands from Richard Morville, Lord of Cunningham, about 1170. It is bounded on the W. [West] and north by Ardrossan ; on the South by the Firth of Clyde; on the East by Kilwinning & Irvine the River Garnock. which separating it for about 3 miles, from the parish of irvine; and on the Southeast by the confluence of the River Garnock and Irvine There is no part of this parish situated within any other parish, nor is there any detached portion of any other parish situated within it. The antiquities are few and not very interesting- |

The origin of this stone is obscure - from enquiries made nothing of a satisfactory nature can be elicited Mr Alexander Campbell Post office Saltcoats states that he believes it to have been erected to mark the Site of the Original farm Steading of Corsecraig which was at or near the object in question and which farm was occupied by his Grandfather but it is more than probable that the Stone was prior to that age and doubtless erected to mark or commemorate some particular event.-
There is no local tradition or history relating to this Stone |

"Of simple memorial stones, examples might be cited in nearly every

nothing but relative size, and the varying outlines of their
unhewn masses. They have outlived the traditions of their rearers

Parish of Stevenston -- County of Ayr
There was a small village of antiquity, called
Piper heugh, of which there are some remains in the
wood at Ardeer. The inhabitants were chiefly Trump
makers: and there are some it would appear, in Stevenston of the same profession, for in the
Commissariat of Glasgow we find the record of the death, in 1627, of Agnes Glasgow, spouse to John Logane, trump
-maker in Stevenston; The trump which they manufactured at Piperheugh was the Jews' Harp; and from the name of
their residence it would appear that this little colony possessed the united accomplishments of Jubal and Tubal being not [only]
'artificers in [brass] and iron' but 'handlers of the harp', and [it is probable] of the pipe.

"The old church of Stevenston was dedicated to St. Monk. This is shown by the will of Archibald Weyr, dated 7th October 1547. The church then in existence was superseded by a new church about the year 1670 to which the people of Saltcoats added an aisle about 1744. Part of the old fabric was supposed to have been retained. This building, however, has been entirely removed within these few years, and a comfortable new building, erected [in] its place.
