034 | A large and rapid Stream which rises from Surface water in Glenbuck. Ph. [Parish] of Muirkirk, and after a Course of about 30 miles falls into the Sea at the town of Ayr. For the first few miles of its Course it is only a Small Stream, but being joined by the Greenock and Garpal - two of its principal tributaries - it becomes Considerable. The last 20 miles of its Course it is bounded principally by Steep banks mostly wooded. A few fertile holms lie interspersed along its margins. In its bed is found a kind of Claystone well known by the name of "Water of Ayr Stone" Said to be a good whetstone. |
