This parish was, formerly, part of the extensive parish of Mauchline. The name of the ph. [parish] was anciently. Sanchar, or Senechar from the Gaelic Sean Chaer, the old fort.
It is bounded on the West by Mauchline, on the N. [North] by Galston, on the N.E. [North East] by Avondale (Lanarkshire, & Muirkirk, and on the E. [East] and S. [South] by Auchinleck.
Its extreme length from N. [North] to S. [South] is about 6½ miles, extreme width about 6 from E. [East] to W. [West].
The antiquities of the parish are few, and will be found described in some of the following pages.
There is a detached portion of this parish within the parish of Mauchline, but no detached portion of any other within this.
