Chalmers Caledonia |
018 ; 022 ; 024 |
It is Stated in Chalmers Caledonia that The Parish of Riccartoun was, in former times, called Ricardstown. This name was obviously derived, from some early proprietor of the name of Richard, & the common Anglosaxon termination of tun; forming Ricardstun, or Richardstown.
The parish is bounded on the north by Kilmarnock, an the east by Galston, on the south by Craigie & Symington, and on the west by Dundonald & Kilmaurs. Its extreme length from east to west is about 8 miles, extreme breadth from north to south, about 3½_
The antiquities of the parish are few and not very interesting. and will be found described in the following pages of this book -
There is a portion of this parish detached, a narrow strip of the parish of Galston intervening.

This bush once stood near the left bank of the Irvine Water and on the farm of Maxholm not far West of the farmhouse. it was taken down about 25 years ago. The following traditionary tale may be heard from many of the inhabitants of Riccarton
"Wallace one day when fishing in the Irvine Water fell in with a party of English Soldiers 5 in number, who demanded his fish, he offered them part, but less than the whole wold not Satisfy them, unwilling to part with the whole he struck one of them with the butend of his fishing rod, Stunned him, then Snatching his Sword from him, he Soon laid two of the party dead at his feet the remainder retreated leaving Wallace Master of the field and of his fish. " Wallace, after this encounter, is reported to have Said "I trow that was a bicker" A bush growing near the Spot was ever after called the Bickering Bush |
