023 | A Village Situated on the left bank of the Irvine Water which Seperates it from the Town of Kilmarnock. it has a handsome Parish Church, a Parish School, and a few Small Inns. The Inhabitants are chiefly colliers. The farmsteading of Yardside in the Village is said to occupy the site of the ancient Tower once the residence of Sir Ronald Crawford the maternal uncle of Sir William Wallace. The Inhabitants point out the Site of the old Ash which had an iron staple driven in to it, to which they say Sir William used to tie his horse when he came to the Tower. They also point out an old Pear Tree which they Say was planted by Wallace and they call it "Wallace's Tree" it still bears some fruit. |
