It is stated in Chalmer's Caledonia that the name is derived from "the British Cwm, A hollow, or Valley, and cnoc, a hill: forming Cwm cnoc, which was usually pronounced Cumnock.
The parish is bounded on the North and east by Auchinleck, on the south by New Cumnock, and on the west by Ochiltree
Its extreme length, from east to west is about 9½ miles. extreme width from N. [North] to S. [South] about 4½
The antiquities of the parish are few but interesting, and will be found described in the following pages of this book.
There are no detached portions of any parish within this, nor of this parish within any other.
