It has a winding Course of about 10 miles in a mostly westerly direction, falling into the River Ayr adjacent to Sundrum about 4 miles from Ayr. It forms the boundary between the parishes of Coylton and Ochiltree, and Coylton and Stair. Its Course is, for the most part, through agricultural and on a gravelly bed. Its banks in places are precipitous and in general well wooded.

The name extends no farther than its junction with another burn, about 15 chains North of Whitehill. For a small portion of its course it divides the Parishes of Ochiltree & Stair (detached). Bed for most part gravelly.
