035 A neat plain regularly built Country Village at the junction of the Burnock with the Lugar, on the turnpike road from Ayr to Cumnock, 12 miles from the former and 4 from the latter, at the meeting of 5 roads, viz one to Mauchlin and Tarbolton, one to Auchinleck, one to Cumnock, the other two new and old to Ayr, a portion of the Village is on each of those roads but the chief part is on the old road to Ayr - which is on the side of a Steep Sloping hill it Contains about 600 of population two Churches two Manses two Schoolhouses 5 Public houses one post - office and Several Small retail Shops. the buildings are generally one Storey high mostly thatched and kept in good repair attached to each is a Small patch of garden enclosed by thorn hedges a great many of the dwellings are Modern all of which are Slated the Chief proprietors are the Heirs of the late Alexander Ross Esqr Dowager Lady Boswell and Thomas Cuthbert Esqr - it has a neat Clean appearance See Mill Street for Antiquities of the Village
