"This parish anciently formed part of the extensive parish of Mauchline, and belonged to the Monks of Melrose. It was erected into a separate parish in 1631, and the church built at that period was "styled "The Kirk of the Muir".
It is bounded on the N. [north] by Avondale, on the N. E. [north-east] by
Lesmahagow and on the E. [east] by
Douglas & Crawford John in the County of Lanark, on the S. [south] and W. [West] by Auchinleck, and on the S. W. [south-west] by Sorn.-
Its shape is irregular. Extreme length, from E. [east] to W. [west] about 10 Miles, extreme breadth, from N. [North] to S. [south] about 7½ -
The antiquities of the parish are few, and not very interesting, and will be found described in some of the following pages -
There is no detached portion of this parish in any other, nor any portion of any other parish within this.
[Signed] John C Giles -

The name given to a rocky slope on each side of the Greenock Water, as written on the Trace. The rocks are composed of "The Old Red Sandstone" The tradition accounting for the derivation of the name is as follows - [Campbell] the Laird of Aughens (beside Troon) and his followers pursueing some Annandale theives surprised them at this spot, where they had halted for the night - and a Battle ensued in which a number of the "Freebooters" were Slain, In the little "Holm"on the South side of the river are small mounds of Earth, which are supposed to be the graves of those who fell. There is also a small Stone in the shape of a "Heed stone" without any inscription at the east end of the mounds -- (over) [continued] |

A remarkable object situated
on a slight eminence on Burnfoot
Moor. The Stone is about 4 feet
high and broken in several places,
There are no distinguishing marks
that could lead to the possibility
of Knowing the Origin by which it was
placed there. Mr. Whyte - factor for
Lord Henry Bentinck states that by
tradition it is supposed to mark
the Site of a battle between the
Picts and the Romans - but according
to Mr. Brown of "Greenockmains", (See [Description] [Remark], 30.2. T .5) it is supposed to mark the grave of one of the Campbells; Laird of Auchens who was slain in an encounter with some Annandale "Freebooters". |

If so. all vestiges of it are now completely gone - In proof of the assertion the Ironworks in the neighbourhood at & before that period stood on the opposite bank of the Water of Ayr in Auchenleck Parish - and "Greenock Town" is shown as a village in an old estate map drawn in 1771, in the possesion of William Brown Esq of Greenockmains - |

MUIRKIRK [village] |
|
|
031 |
[Continued]
"Muirkirk - surrounded by Coalpits and iron-works - the land either black heath or blacker clay - destitute of trees - is not a village of the most attractive possible character, The large works in the neighbourhood give employment to about five hundred men who live in the village" The original name of the place was Garun, from the height on which its earliest houses stood, and the following notice of it appears in the Old Statistical account - The only village or rather Clachan as they are commonly called, that deserves the name, lies at a small distance from the church, by the side of the high road on a Rising ground call Garan - hill which therefore gave name to the Range of houses which occupy it &c &c |
