030 | The name given to a rocky slope on each side of the Greenock Water, as written on the Trace. The rocks are composed of "The Old Red Sandstone" The tradition accounting for the derivation of the name is as follows - [Campbell] the Laird of Aughens (beside Troon) and his followers pursueing some Annandale theives surprised them at this spot, where they had halted for the night - and a Battle ensued in which a number of the "Freebooters" were Slain, In the little "Holm"on the South side of the river are small mounds of Earth, which are supposed to be the graves of those who fell. There is also a small Stone in the shape of a "Heed stone" without any inscription at the east end of the mounds -- (over) [continued] |
