026 | Within this small enclosure is placed a gravestone and beneath are deposited the remains of John Brown, the same alluded to in the Stat [Statistical] Acct [Account], of this Parish, The epitaph on the gravestone states that he was shot by a party of Men under the Command of Graham of Claverhouse, on the 1st May, 1685. for his adhearance to the "Covenant", There was an Anniversary Sermon preached here in 1826. and the amount collected on that occasion went towards the expense of erecting a "Monumental Stone" to his Memory. The Monumental Stone is about 6 feet high and of a plain description. it is placed with the gravestone within the enclosure, |

"The most remarkable of these monuments
is the gravestone of one John Brown, erected on
the farm of Priesthill. The death of this man was
perpetrated with such cold-blooded cruelty, near
his own habitation, and in the presence of his
wife and family, that to visit his grave is
considered a sort of pilgrimage by the pious
of all persuations . The stone bears that he was
