"Muirkirk - surrounded by Coalpits and iron-works - the land either black heath or blacker clay - destitute of trees - is not a village of the most attractive possible character, The large works in the neighbourhood give employment to about five hundred men who live in the village" The original name of the place was Garun, from the height on which its earliest houses stood, and the following notice of it appears in the Old Statistical account - The only village or rather Clachan as they are commonly called, that deserves the name, lies at a small distance from the church, by the side of the high road on a Rising ground call Garan - hill which therefore gave name to the Range of houses which occupy it &c &c
