Sheet 44.12 -- Parish of Maybole -- [Page] 142

[Note Nape of Daltammie] scored out " This object does not
extent into Maybole
Parish, but is contained
in Kirkoswald

"There are various encampments in the parish,
" and traces of others enclosed by mounds of earth. Though they may have
" been British fortlets, of the Roman period, it is probable that they were
"connected with more recent wars - the invasions of the Irish, or the Danes
"and Norwegians." from Pattersons History of Ayrshire

The Statistical Account (1842) speaking of the old forts etc in
Maybole parish, says, "It is common to designate them as Roman Camps;
"but they appear of far too inconsiderable dimensions to be connected with
"the history of that great people, and are far more likely the remains of small
"forts erected by the Irish who frequently overran the country, and many of which, of
"the very same form & construction, are still found in Ireland."
