044 ; 045 | An ancient seat of the the Earls of Carrick with which are associated various local traditions.- The Property of the Marquis of Ailsa - now inhabited by his Factor. Maybole Castle is constructed in the Gothic Style of Architecture and has been recently rebuilt and enlarged about 8 years ago.- It is four storeys high and is in excellent repair.- On the south west side and immediately below the window of the fourth storey, are cut out in stone, thirteen heads, which are traditionally known to have been the heads of a gang of Gipseys, the leader of whom fell in love with the Lady of Culzean, who was determined to elope with him, but was taken and confined in the Castle, and the heads of the Gipseys put up in remembrance of the act.- |
