It is stated in Chalmers' Caledonia that "Mauchlin parish derived its name, from the town, whereat stands the Church, and the town has its name from the Gaelic Maghlin, signifying the plain with the pool; (Llyn) in the British, and Linne , in the Gaelic, signifies a pool, in a running stream."
The parish is bounded on the N. [North] by Galston and a detached portion of Riccarton; on the E. [East] by Sorn; on the S. [South] by Auchinleck, and Ochiltree; and on the W. [West] by Stair, Tarbolton, and Craigie. Its extreme length from east to west, is about six miles its average width about three.
The Antiguities of the parish are few, and will be found described in the following pages.
There is a detached portion of the Parish of Sorn, within this parish but no detached portion of this in any other parish.

This name is well Known in the Town of Mauchline, its extent is from one of Main Street to S.W. [South West] end of Townhead. whether the name is derived from a + which may have been erected here, or from the intersection of the great lines of Turnpike Road at this place it is now difficult to ascertain.
That a cross might have been erected here is not irrevalent to the case from its proximity to the Priory or Religious Establishment Supposed to occupy the Space at or about where this Parish Church now Stands. |

" In 1685, during the unhappy reign of James VII.
of Scotland, five men belonging to the parish were
Slaughtered by the emissaries of an obnoxious government.
They were buried where they were executed, in
the public green at the Townhead. Over their graves
was a stone bearing the following inscription;-
"Bloody Dumbarton, Douglas and Dundee,
Moved by the Devil and the Laird of Lee,
Dragged these five men to death with gun & sword,
Not suffering them to pray nor read Gods word.
Owning the work of God was all their Crime,
The eighty five was a Saint Killing time."
The hole where the gibbet was fixed is said to be still visible. In 1830
the tombstone was lifted, and a new monument erected to the honor of the Martyrs
upon which the above lines are carefully engraved."

George Patrick Mauchline. |

The object which bears this name is an old White Thorn on the South side of the Parish Road near East & South Mossgiel it appears according to the testimony of the Authorities quoted with the exception of George Patrick that this tree or Bush was a Favourite resort of Beggars and Itinerant Strollers and that the late Poet Robert Burns christened the Bush as Supplied.
George Patrick aged 85 states the he knew Burns Uncle and is Confident that the object in Question was well Known as the Lousy Bush before Burns came to the farm of Mossgiel. - |

This name applies to the bend of the road a little East of South Mossgiel. it appears that some 60 or 70 years ago the road was Kept in bad repair here. Together with a stream of water which flows across the road which caused Stepping Stones to be placed.
Parties travelling from Mauchline well filled with spirits were considered fortunate if they managed to cross this place without tumbling in, hence the name.
George Patrick likewise states that this name was in existence before Burns arrival in the locality. one thing certain that this name with the Lousy Bush are well known. |

It is the opinion of the parties who are quoted as Authorities in this page that the Priory occupied the ground on which the Parish Church now stands and part of the Lawn West side of Castle, that to a certain extent is Conjecture. It cannot at present be ascertained whether any traces of building or foundation of building have been discovered in this generation to warrant the extent to be defined on the Plans. - |

"The parish church or Priory of Mauchline, was
no doubt erected by the Monks of Melrose, as
Supported by Chalmers, after 1165, and the Village or
Kirktoun of Mauchline gradually sprung up in the vicinity.
The Church forming the part of the original Priory, it is supposed,
and with which the Tower at Mauchline is believed

town, having the Church Yard around it. The Old Church
was Superseded, Some years ago, by a handsome new edifice,
after the Gothic Style, with a tower about ninety feet high."
"Now that the church has been removed, the Tower of Mauchline,
as it is called, may be said to be the only remain of the Ancient Priory. -

"The parish church, occupying a site in the centre of the town, is highly ornamental to it. and has
been pronounced one of the most handsome ecclesiastical edifices in Ayrshire." "Its predecessor,
a lumpish, plain, sombre building," "stood for six centuries on the same site, surrounded by

"Fullartons Gazetteer.
"The old Church after having stood upwards of
six centuries, was found to be both
inconvenient and unsafe, was
taken down in 1827, and the
present Church erected over

Chapter X [10] Charles I. 1648
In Clydesdale the disposition to rise was very general
and had any leading man in that quarter come
forward. the majority of the population would have
followed. Callendar and Middleton, to prevent
any serious opposition were sent instantly west, and
on Monday. June 10th.. they rendezvoused at
Stewarton. sixteen hundred horses and about ten thousand foot.
The noblemen and gentlemen of the Shire of Ayr
who had had a committee meeting at Riccarton
on the Saturday respecting the courses they were to
pursue, learning that Fife remained tranquil.
that Argyle had gone to Inverary and that a
large force had arrived in the neighbourhood.
determined to lay aside all thoughts of resistance.
and as a number of the Clydesdale men were to
communicate at Mauchline. next day. sent notice
thither of their determination. The assemblage
however would not disperse: but after sunrise on the
morning of Monday, they mustered on Mauchline moor
about twelve hundred horses, eight hundred foot, and
eight ministers. While in the act of choosing officers
Middleton made his appearance with the advance
and the ministers, to prevent bloodshed, immediately
went up to him. - A capitulation was in consequence
entered into, by which the whole were allowed
quietly to disperse, except such as had appointed
soldiers, and refused to join. When the ministers
returned and informed the crowd of this agreement,
the greater part of those who belonged the Kyle
and Cunninghame went home; but the recruits,
joined by the Clydesdale men, stood out.
After remaining nearly an hour in parley
Middleton ordered his horse to charge, and the
greater part fled: but a few took possession of a
bridge and disputed the passage stoutly: nearly
forty fell, nor were they dislodged, till Callendar |

Extract from Wodrow's history of the Sufferings
of the Church of Scotland AD 1721
The Earl of Middleton 'He was Major General
under Duke Hamilton and engaged with a Handful of
Countrymen at Mauchlin-muir in the shire of Airwhere
he was in some regard. He and his Party came upon
a Company of Country People, on a Munday after a
Communion who had not the least thought of fighting
and were improvided for it. Mr Thomas Wylie Minister
of Mauchlin under whose Hand I have an account
of that Action and some other Ministers travelled
'twixt the People and Middleton and got his
Promise to permit the People to dismiss peaceably
Which when they were doing his Men fell upon
the People and with some slaughter scattered
them and Kept the Muir. When he came to
Mauchline the Minister quarrelled his breach of
Promise and Capitulation and he put it off
with alledging that some of the people had
provoked his Men with harsh Speeches." |
