029 | Although this Hill Cannot be more than 3 or 4 Hundred feet in height (from the base to the Summit,) yet it is rendered very Conspicuous by the flatness of the Surrounding Country. It Commands a view of nearly the whole of Ayrshire a great portion of Renfrew & Lanark Shires the Firth of Clyde Arran Hills and Cantire And it is Said that on a clear day the pass of Jura Can be discerned from its Summit The Hill tho' [though] fit for Cultivation is Kept in pasture and judiciously enclosed with a thriving Plantation. It is sometimes Called Welton Hill by the people residing in the immediate locality but it is popularly Known throughout the parish as "Mauchline Hill" It is the property of Mr Alexander of Ballochmyle |
