The Remains of this Ancient Church are Situated in the Western part of the Parish and not far from Galston, a portion at the east end is yet entire and kept in repair by the Loudoun Family and has been long used by them as a place of Sepulture. this part is generally called 'The Quere' it is prnounced as if so written, by Quere is, very probably meant Quire, which means, that part of a church, in which the Singers Sit. The side walls are completely removed, except, those of the 'Quere' or Quire no part of them appearing above the Surface, but the west gable is yet standing. The Characters DRC appear cut on stone on the North and South sides of the 'Quere' what these characters mean is not known. It is not known when this Church was erected but it is believed to be of very ancient date. |

This is considered one of the largest and most magnificent Buildings in the West of Scotland. The Marquis of Hastings is proprietor. It was built at various times the outward appearance is that of a modern building. Fullarton in his gazetteer mentions two ancient towers, only one can be pointed out and this is encased in modern masonry. when this was erected, is unknown. Some brass Cannon were found in the neighbourhood of the Castle some 70 or 80 years ago, but the Spot can not be pointed out. Fullarton mentions a druidical ruin being in one of the enclosures near the Castle. There is no such thing now, nor is it known in the neighbourhood that there ever was. |

The existing mansion (Loudoun Castle) is a magnificent one.
It stands on a gentle slope, on the north bank of the
Irvine, about half a mile from the river." The structure
itself singularly combines the attractions of massive
antiquity with the light gracefulness of modern
architecture. One of the square towers, with a battlement,
is supposed to have been erected in the 12th
or 13th century. This portion was partially destroyed
when besieged by General Monk. It was defended
on the occasion by Lady Loudoun, who capitulated
on honourable terms. Another larger and higher
tower, built about the 15th century, lifts its
battlemented head commandingly above
the surrounding mass of buildings. A larger
addition, greatly improving the pile, was made
in 1622, by Chancellor Loudoun, but the

Loudoun Castle. What is perhaps erroniously
called the old Castle of Loudoun was, according
to tradition, destroyed by fire, more than 300
years ago, by the Kennedies of Carrick, headed
by the Earl of Cassillis. It may have been one
of the strong holds of the family, but the present
seems to have been always the principal residence.

"To the memory of John Nisbit of Hardhill
who suffered Martyrdom at the Grass Market Edinburgh Dec. [December] 4th, 1685.
Animated by a spirit to which genuine religion alone could give birth, the pure flame of Civil and Religious Liberty can keep alive. He manfully struggled for a Series of Years to stem the tide of national degeneracy and liberate his Country from the tyrannical aggression of the perjured House of Stuart.
His conduct in Arms at Pentland, Drumclog and Bothwell in opposition to pretatic encroachment in defense of Scotland's Covenanted Reformation is recorded in the annals of those oppressive times.
His Remains lie at Edinburgh but the Inhabitants of this his native Parish have caused this stone to be erected." |

About 80 links from the Castle at Newmilns is a Stone Tablet fixed in the end of a building about 4 feet from the ground to mark the spot where John Law of Loudounhill was buried who was shot in rescuing the Covenanters whom Captain Inglis had confined in the Castle.
The following is the Inscription.
Here lies John Law who was shot at Newmilns at the rescuing of eight of Christs prisoners who were taken at a meeting for prayer at Little Blackwood in the Parish of Kilmarnock in April 1685 by Capt. [Captain] Inglis and his party for their adherance to the word of God and Scotlands Covenanted work of Reformation
Cause I Christs prisoners relieved
I of my life was soon "berieved"
By cruel enemies with rage
In that encounter did engage
The Martyr and his crown
Bestowed on me O big renown
That I should not only believe
But for Christs cause my life I should give. |

The name of the parish is generally understood to be derived from a very prominent object near its eastern boundary, Called Loudoun Hill. "The writer in the Old Statistical Account derives the name from the old word law, a fire, and don or dun, a hill;" "Chalmers, in his Caledonia, seeks for its etymology in a conjunction of the Saxon & Celtic Hlaew, or Lau, and Dun and in proof of this adduces some of the earlier charters, where the name is spelled Laudon." It is bounded on the N. [North] and N.E. [North East] by Eaglesham, & on the E. [East] by Avondale, Lanarkshire, on the S. [South] by Galston, and on the W. [West] by Kilmarnock & Fenwick. The shape of the parish is triangular. Extreme length from E. [East] to W. [West], about 8 miles. Width about 5 1/2, from N. [North] to S. [South]
The antiquities are interesting, and will be found described in some of the following pages of this book.
There are no detached portions of this parish in any other, nor of any other parish in this. |
