001 |
There is no trace left at the present time of this Chapel, which stood on the South Side of BlackHouse Burn. Mr Stewart of St Fillans House, remembers seeing a portion of its walls standing, and also states that it must have been but a small building, he having got his workmen to clear away the foundation and rubbish etc. Mr Stewart is also of opinion that the existence of a Chapel here is not perhaps known to any others in the Parish of Largs, and might have been So to himself, had he not been residing in its neighbourhood together with it being on his own property. |

It has a rather Singular appearance and according to the Old Statistical Account of the Parish; it was thought to have been artificial; but this opinion is not at all entertained at the present day, by any of the inhabitants in the neighbourhood; neither is there any traditional information or any old tales connected with it, although being a very remarkable feature in the Glen. |

Around the summit of "The Knock" there is a green circular bank or mound of earth etc Supposed to have been a Fort, in general it is about 3 feet high on the inside or side nearest the Hill top but on the outside it is greater, and in some places is pretty steep and slopes for a short distance down the Hill. A tradition exists in the neighbourhood respecting it; but it is thus mentioned in the Old Stat Acct [Statistical Account] "On the Top of Knock Hill is the vestige of a small Camp with three regular entrenchments". It is also mentioned in the "Beauties of Scotland". "A mountain rising to a considerable height in the shape of a Cone and green to the top where there is still a vestige of some work of ancient times. Perhaps it might have served for a watch tower" |

"The village of Largs is beautifully and Salubriously Situated on the Coast, 8½ miles from Innerkip 9 from Kilbirnie, and 13½ from Saltcoats. It is built upon a large deposit of gravel that must at one time have formed part of the channel of the Firth. Its appearance is neat and cheerful and, in connection with the scenery around it is eminently beautiful.
The place is a favourite retreat in the Summer months of families from Glasgow, Greenock, and other for ruralising and Seabathing: and all respects worthy of the abundant patronage it enjoys Numerous pleasant and even handsome buildings line its little Streets, built and arranged in a style to afford equal accommodation and comfort to visitors chary of their enjoyments etc.
A large part of the inhabitants depend mainly on rents and perquisites, and profits drawn from Summer visitors: a few are maintained by the fisheries a considerable number act as the poor Subordinates of the Glasgow manufacturers Several Steamboats ply between this place and Glasgow in Summer and two continually during winter

The Stone which Stood at the place marked on Trace, was removed by the late Dr [Doctor] Cairnie and fixed in His garden wall, and bears a Latin Inscription on a Small brass plate, bearing the date A.D. 1823. The stone is reputed to Commemorate the place where Haco the Norwegian Chief fell, at the Battle of Largs, and is about 10 feet high by 2 wide.
The persons quoted in the list of authorities say it is supposed generally that the vicinity of this Stone was the Chief Scene of the contest. |

breadth. and between 4 or 5 in height. It' proximity to the Church, and the circumstance
of human bones having been found beneath a portion of it that was removed Several years
ago, afford testimony corresponding to that of the Norwegian Chronicle, that Haco [did]
bury, at least, some of his dead, at the church of Largs."
"The only other vestige which has withstood the changes of modern times, is
the barrow close by the west wall of the burying-ground, which corroborates
the Norwegian account of their dead having been interred at the Church."

The ancient church, dedicated to St Columba (the abbot of the Island of Iona) was Situated in the burying grounds, South of Gallowgate St. and was removed at the time of the erection of the present building. the only vestige of the original building now remaining, is a Small piece of the South wall to which is attached an ancient monument (the record on which is quite obliterated by time). the date of its erection is unknown, but can be traced further back than the Battle of Largs, which happened in 1263 - The present building in the burying ground was an aisle added to the original, by Sir Robert Montgomerie in 1636, and is in good preservation and Contains a burial vault and over it a richly Sculptured monument - belonging to the Montgomerie family. This Church was a Rectory the patronage of which belonged to the Lordship of Largs. See next page

"The Parish Church is situated at the North West corner of Nelson Street, facing the Sea, and is a neat but plain building originally an oblong in plan, but by the addition of aisles to its eastern extremity, in 1821 it has been made to assume a Cruciform appearance. A Steeple of a quadrilateral form. crowned with embrasures, and small turrets at the angles. from which rises an octagonal Spire, surmounted by a weather Cock, graces the west gable, which is, moreover, the principal facade of the building. Within, the Church presents a light airy and comfortable look, and is capable of accommodating about 1300 Sitters The Parish Churches and burying grounds of Ayrshire.
The Church was built in 1812. |

"Largs, noted for the engagement which took place in its neighbourhood in 1263, between the Scottish
Army, and that of Haco King of Norway, in which the latter was defeated with prodigious Slaughter.
The Battle of Largs which has been celebrated in the popular ballad of HardiKnute, and which
was certainly one of the most brilliant victories ever achieved by the Scottish Arms, took
place on a large plain upon the Sea Shore, to the south of the village, where there existed
before the improvements of the ground, several vast heaps of stones, covering or commemorating
the slain, and a tall Massive Stone (see Standing Stone, and site of Cairns & tumulus) supposed to mark
the grave of a Danish Chief. Haco was so dejected by his Misfortune, that he did not
return immediately to his Country, but went to Orkney and died of grief." Chambers Pictures of Scotland Vol1 Page 115

Battle of Largs continued -
"The chief scene of the contest is supposed to have been a large
plain southward of the village of Largs, still presenting
a recumbent stone 10 feet long, which once stood upright,
and is believed to have been placed over the grave of a chieftain;
and vestiges of Cairns and tumuli formed, as is said over pits
into which the bodies of the Slain were thrown."
Full [Fullarton's] Gazetteer
"An ingenious paper was drawn up on the subject of this battle and its localities, by the late
John Dillon Esq a man of high talent for research. He shows with
plausibility that the landing of the Norwegians must have taken place between the South end
of Brisbane Crescent and Fairlie Burn, and that the conflict took place immediately
below Haylie." New Stat Acct [New Statistical Account]. [marginal note - Brisbane Place as is now called]
The Battle of the Largs was fought with great bravery on both sides, and victory was
doubtful, till by a violent assault , given by Alexander the high Steward, both on the
front and flank of the Norwegians, they were broken, and put into such confusion, that
a rout immediately followed. The Smallest number computed to have been killed of
the Norwegians is 16000, and of the Scots 5000; which was the last carnage occasioned
by the Norwegian or Danish invasions in Britain."
Maitland's Hist [History] of Scotland
Vol [Volume] 1 P. [Page] 392
"When morning broke (2nd October 1263) Haco came on shore with a large reinforcement,
and ordered the transports to be lightened and towed to the ships. Soon after the Scottish army appeared at a distance, upon the high ground above the village of Largs, The cavalry and footmen were led by the King in person, along with Alexander the High Steward of Scotland And the Norwegians, commanded by 3 principal leaders.

This eminence or Law is almost entirely removed and the ground Cultivated. All that now remains is situated in a field adjoining Haylee House, and consists of four large rough stones set on edge and another flat stone laid over them as a cover. Mr Boyd Sen [Senior] says they were near the centre of what was called "Margaret's Law" and were allowed to remain as they were found. The skulls mentioned in the Stat Acct [Statistical Account] were found in the enclosure formed by these stones and immediatly round about them. It is not well known in the neighbourhood by the name of "Margaret's Law". Only some very old people have a faint recolection of its being applied to this place. It is usually called the "Tomb" or Tomb Park. Margarets Law was a tumulus supposed by the inahbitants of the neighbourhood to have been erected over the bodies of those who fell in the Battle but the origin of the name is unknown. At the back of the Mansion house of Haylee, there are the Remains of a tumulus, which was doubtless erected over the bodies of those who fell at the Battle of Largs. It is called Margaret's Law but this was probably the corruption of some other name"

Margaret's Law Continued
" Mr Wilson of Hailley, having occasion for Stones
to inclose part of his grounds in the year 1772, opened a small hill called
Margaret's Law, Supposed to be natural, but found to be a collection of Stones,
Containing upwards of 15000 cart loads; in the centre of which were discovered
5 Stone Coffins, two of them Containing five Sculls each with other human
bones, and several earthern Urns. It is generally believed they had been
there since the battle of Largs. The name Hailley seems to give count-
enance to this conjecture, being derived from the Old Saxon word
hadil, a grave."
