FORT [The Knock] | Fort Fort Fort |
John Boyd Esq Largs James Crawford Harplaw Mr Thomas Carter Brisbane |
003 | Around the summit of "The Knock" there is a green circular bank or mound of earth etc Supposed to have been a Fort, in general it is about 3 feet high on the inside or side nearest the Hill top but on the outside it is greater, and in some places is pretty steep and slopes for a short distance down the Hill. A tradition exists in the neighbourhood respecting it; but it is thus mentioned in the Old Stat Acct [Statistical Account] "On the Top of Knock Hill is the vestige of a small Camp with three regular entrenchments". It is also mentioned in the "Beauties of Scotland". "A mountain rising to a considerable height in the shape of a Cone and green to the top where there is still a vestige of some work of ancient times. Perhaps it might have served for a watch tower" |
