The one towards [the] West is named the Engine Pit and [is] wrought at the depth of 40 [fathoms] The winding engine is 15 horse [power]. Their is also an engine of 30 [horse power] for pumping water, attached [to] the shaft towards the East is named Findlay's Pit from the [circumstance] of a man of that name having [been] drowned in it. it is wrought about [the] depth of 27 fathoms, the engine is 10 horse power. The quantity of coals raised from these pits (which are of [usual] quality) during the last 3 years averaged 63,555 Creels, each creel containing 3 Cwt [hundred-weight] and sold at 8d. & 1/- [8 pence and 1 shilling] per [creel].Mr. James Cooper, farmer, Whitehill new Dailly has a lease of them from Sir James Ferguson Bart.
